Islam isn't doomed per se anymore than Christianity was in its most dogmatic form during the Dark Ages and Middle Ages. Islam is going through its own Dark Age right now and hopefully more moderate voices will prevail. What eanassir seems to forget is that The Bible, The Torah and The Qur'an are all part of the same message. Why stop there? Any philosophy or faith exhorting humans to be good and kind to one another and to try to continually improve themselves is a worthwhile faith. Just don't forget to question everything you see and hear. As we Sufis like to say "A donkey with a load of holy books is still a donkey"

...Besides which, having manners and morals in a book is wonderful. But if they don't translate into actual behavior, what's the use?

This is an obvious mistake.

We believe in God in the deep of our hearts and minds and conscience;

but God is certainly over His glorious throne above the ethereal heavens or the kingdom of heavens or as is it called in the Psalms of David: He mounted over the heaven of heavens.
The Universe and the Quran

And the Books: the Torah revealed to Moses, the Gospel revealed to Jesus and the Quran revealed to Mohammed; these are the Books of God that He revealed as guidance to humanity; so why shouldn't we follow the Books of God and not the books of atheists which are the revelation of Satan and his suggestions.

The parable that you said is not related to this meaning; it is derived from an aya in the Quran meaning that the Children of Israel in the past were given the Torah but they didn't work according to its instructions, so their likeness is like the donkey bearing a load of books [of the Torah] on his back, yet he does not benefit of these books; only the books are burden on him"

Do you as a Sufi believe in the Quran as the word of God revealed to Prophet Mohammed, and you believe in the Quran as a whole or only part of it that you like while you dislike other part and don't believe in it?

So now you say the Islam is in its dark age, where is your position in this dark age, when God said in the Quran 48: 28

The likeness of Jews who did not apply the Torah

It is like the Children of Israel in the past: they had the Torah enwrapped in silk in their temple but they did not work accordingly; so God said in the Quran 62: 5
Read Quran in Uthmani Script Online

The explanation:
(The likeness of those [Jews] who were entrusted with the Law [of Moses], yet applied it not,

is as the likeness of the ass carrying Books [of the prophets of the Old Testament.]

Evil is the likeness of people who deny the past and the present] revelations of God.

And God guides not wrongdoing people.)

The Sufi parable could apply to anyone who doesn't benefit from those books, not just Jews..Sufis believe in the whole Quran but probably have different interpretations from other people, we tend to see all religions as containing a bit of truth.
