I've always been very critical of Saudi Arabia and their treatment of women. Here's a link that describes how a man who was in debt to another man literally sold his daughter to wipe out that debt.
I find it so irritating that American politicians are so reluctant to criticize Saudi Arabia due to it's status as the largest producer of oil in the world and it's pro-western political policies. There's no modern western nation that would even consider allowing such an injustice and yet I have no doubt that this and other violations of women and children are going to be ignored by America and everybody else. It says in the article that the Muslim chief cleric in Saudi Arabia supports this sort of thing. I'm curious what any Muslims on the forum might think of it.
I'm not an adherent of Islam, nor do I think Saudi Arabia has much of a record when it comes to the treatment of women. However, at the same time, I realize that I look at things this way as an American. And I recognize the sovereignty of other nations. The fact is, what goes on in Saudi courts is none of our business (in the same way as no Saudi has a right to criticize what happens here in the United States).
While at a personal level most in the US abhor such incidents, at a governmental level not much is done anyway. In fact, multiple US administrations have propped up the kingdom for decades in the interest of oil. Some other allies are not too different - we know about the Taliban in Afghanistan. Here is today's news about our ally Pakistan: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/15/wo...ef=global-home

I see this as a human rights issue that all nations should condemn. We're talking about selling people as though they're property. I also have no problem when other nations criticize the United States when we do something that's wrong.
