The purpose behind this is not to hurt or humiliate the woman,
rather it is intended to make her realize that she has transgressed against her husband’s rights, and that her husband has the right to set her straight and discipline her.

Why do I see nothing mentioned about the husband getting "light taps" from the wife when he misbehaves? It's not always the wife's fault when things go sour....Can the wife beat on the husband when he's a bad boy? This may be off topic, but I have heard that the Muslim wife must obey the husband in all things including sex...Has the wife no right of refusal? If not, in most of the world that is considered rape.

never. in Islam women are not less valued than men, even a man should be disciplined in his treat towards wife Otherwise she will never live with him. so I ask you, who is a leader in your house, you or your wife?
