[[Note: I have searched old postings regarding relocations to jackson, ms, but most of those have been over 3-4 years old.]]

Hi, I plan to move to the Jackson area as a student for UMC. It will still be a while (almost a year) until I move, but I want to start getting some ideas. Specifically, I have looked at Flowood, since there seems to be some newer apartment complexes in that vicinity. --Are there any other new apartment communities in and around Jackson that is pretty close to UMC? --What about the Ridgeland/Old Canton Rd. area?

Another concern I have is the traffic on Lakeland Dr. I have heard so many horror stories about how bad Lakeland traffic is specifically during the rush hours. Should I worry?

Regarding Flowood, yall have any opinions which apt complexes should I stay away/go for? (newer complexes please!)

Thanks!!

There are apartments in the heart of "downtown Fondren" which is a village-like area right next to the medical center. Fondren has its own website that probably lists the apartment buildings. Also, the neighboring Belhaven neighborhood is loaded with apartments of various styles amid charming historic homes. Even downtown Jackson now has some historic buildings now converted into hip apartment buildings. Dowtown Jackson Partners website probably lists these buildlings.

Regarding Flowood, most everything is basically new. The complexes that are basically brand-new are just off Lakeland past the intersection with Old Fannin Rd which is a big suburban shopping area. Traffic on Lakeland is not that bad. Please. It's traffic, with lights etc, but it's not as horrific as some postings have listed. Lakeland is a divided highway, landscaped down the middle, that is basically 10 lanes. Everything is new and looks pretty nice. So in rush hour traffic is going to move at maybe 40 or 45 miles per hour averaged out. Outside rush hour it's not bad at all.

In Ridgeland, I would recommend apartment complexes along Rice Rd (e.g. The Point), roughly where it crosses Old Canton Rd. There are several new complexes here and you have the added benefit of being able to hop on bike trails that run by the Reservoir which is only a few hundred yards away. Also, the complexes along Lake Harbour Drive near the intersection with Old Canton Rd are also new and pretty much in the middle of everything and a couple of minutes from the Reservoir.

As was mentioned, the Rice Road area apartments in Ridgeland are a good place to look. There are also some on Pear Orchard, but I don't suggest those. I would also avoid the apartments futher up Old Canton (in Ridgeland) toward Jackson/County Line Road, and avoid the County Line Road and Old Canton Road area apartments inside Jackson. Also, if you go across the spillway into Rankin County there are some nicer apartments there. I beleive they probably have Brandon addresses, but they are closer to the Flowood area than actually what most folks would consider Brandon.
