So, I'm moving to Mississippi this summer for a job at UMMC. I've limited down my apartment choices to Cypress Pointe in Flowood, and the Reserve at Byram in Byram. I'm not from the area, so it is going to come down to safety. Can anyone tell me which city would be safest for a single white 25 year old female to live by herself? Any info about the cities/apartments would be appreciated. Thank you!

It depends on your personal goals and where you plan on working, and obviously it would be better for you to go visit the places in advance first.

But based on the minimum I know about you and what I know about the two locations, I recommend Flowood.

Here are places to start for basic information about both towns:

//www.city-data.com/city/Flowood-Mississippi.html

Scroll down to see things like average income, percentage of the population that is male vs female, crime rates, home values, race breakdown, etc.

I would choose Flowood. Flowood has shopping and dining while Byram does not.

Thanks for the help! Would you say that Flowood is safer too then?

I'm not familiar with those particular apartments, but I would guess you will be safe there. You can get a feel for apartments by how well they are kept up. In Flowood, Ashford Place would probably be the top of the line in apartment living and The Woods would be the lowest.

No matter how safe an area is, there will always be opportunistic property crime (auto burglary) in apartment complexes. Don't leave anything valuable in your car or outside of your apartment and always try to park under a light in a busy area.

The local law enforcement authority and fire station will be able to tell you how much crime goes on in any local complex or neighborhood.

i would definitely choose Flowood over Byram. Some of the crime from Jackson seems to be moving to the Byram area. Lakeshore Pointe at the Reservoir is a complex you might want to check out too.

I lived at Lakeshore Pointe about 11 years ago. Nice complex and the staff were great. The biggest amenity when I lived there was it was only 10 mins to Northpark Mall but that isn't the case since they build the huge outlet mall in Flowood.

Flowood is a nice area and very convenient to UMC. Byram is a very safe city also but there is not as much there. Flowood runs along Lakeland Drive (hwy 25) which starts at UMC and runs east for about 10 or 15 miles towards the reservoir and just about everything along that route is new and nice (and yes, very safe).

Thanks so much guys. Looks like I'll be calling Flowood home! Any other information about the area, perhaps good dining recommendations are more than welcome!

Dining options are good. One one end in the Fondren area (next to UMC) are some of Jackson's best local restaurants. You could try Nick's, Babalu, and Walkers for starters and there are probably 5 or 10 more. In Flowood on the opposite end of Lakeland Drive (just past the airport) is a big area of new suburban shopping (Lowes, Best Buy, Kroger, etc, and every type of restaurant from Mexican to Japanese). The other main area with nice shopping is on the north side of town up I-55 in Ridgeland. Check out two areas next to each other called the Renaissance and the Township, both very, very nice new shopping areas with some nice restaurants.
