After loading up with cars in Canton, why does the train have to come back to Jackson and go through Yazoo to get to Memphis? The Jackson-Canton track doesn't go up to Memphis also?

Rail doesn't go to Memphis. It's there but the line is not active I believe.

There is a line that goes to Memphis, but it goes up to Yazoo City and Greenwood. Years ago, Amtrak ran through Durant before changing to the aforementioned route.

The middle portion between Elliott and Canton has been out-of-service a few years. The rail is still intact.
I remember when the City of New Orleans and piggyback trains used to travel this route, which was called the Canton District. However, most freights used the Yazoo District via Yazoo City and Greenwood because the terrain is flat.
In the mid-1990s, the Illinois Central Railroad upgraded the Yazoo District with Centralized Traffic Control and rerouted Amtrak and piggybacks that way. In 1998, Canadian National bought the Illinois Central, but you can still see a few locomotives lettered for the IC.

The Canton Subdivision, used to be called the Grenada Subdivision and yes they ran from Jackson to Memphis, but in 2009 CN sold the line between Canton & Memphis to a shortline that has since stopped using the line since about July 2011 between the small community of Elliott just south of Grenada to Canton. The section between Grenada & Memphis sees one train a day, and that is the Grenada-Memphis turn, that heads to Memphis in the morning, and returns to Grenada that afternoon/evening. That shortline now is engaged with the North Mississippi Regional Rail Authority to sell the line to them, so they can find someone else to use (rumor is another shortline company, Iowa Pacific) the line and upgrade it.

As GEF said, the Yazoo Subdivision is CN & Amtrak's main route for traffic these days handling close up to 30 trains a day.

The popular event is expected to draw between 10,000-15,000 people to Madison County this year, if the weather holds up.

That was alright. I enjoyed the music but it was far from a "festival." Talk about false advertising. It was an event tent and a beer trailer. it lasted a few daylight hours next to a parking lot.
