New businesses flocking to Madison

River Hills Bank will open a location on the corner of Highland Colony Parkway and Fountains Boulevard within the month.

A barbershop, settled into a remodeled home on Highway 51, is two months away from welcoming it's first mop-top.

Longhorn Steakhouse will serve it's first New York strip on Dec. 15, and the first tire will roll off the lot of the 9,000-square-foot Firestone Tire Center this Friday.

Every week, it seems, there's a ribbon-cutting ceremony to attend - and another to look forward to next week - in the city of Madison.

That doesn't come as a surprise to Madison Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Elizabeth Bryant.

"Madison has all of the ingredients for success," she said. "We have a terrific customer base, beautiful buildings and people know they will be safe."
Jerry Cook, senior adviser with Madison the City, is tasked with keeping up with all the economic growth.

"The commercial growth we're experiencing right now is certainly keeping us busy," Cook said. "There is a lot going on, and it's exciting for the city."

Madison Preschool, a daycare facility off of Highway 51, north of Hoy Road in the Homestead Office Park, will open its doors within a month. Insurance giant State Farm opened a new branch adjacent to the nearby Walgreens Pharmacy a month ago.

Over on Highway 463 across from the Beagle Bagel, Four Seasons Carwash recently opened it's second location. Just down the road on Highland Colony, there is construction of a three-building shopping center.

Two new office buildings - one a medical facility and one accounting firm - recently opened in the Fountains Office Park off of Highland Colony as well.

Officials say the current economic boom could continue when transportation projects finish in the coming months and years.

The construction of the split-diamond interchange between existing Madison Avenue and the soon-to-be completed Colony Park Boulevard will add two lanes to Interstate 55 and frontage roads on either side, providing new sites, ripe for the taking for bigger businesses like car dealerships and household-name retailers to set up shop.

Sam's Club - primed to make good on its plans to relocate from County Line Road in Jackson to Grandview Boulevard when it opens its doors next summer - could be just the beginning.

"Their construction is moving right along," Cook said. "I would say they should be open by spring or summer of 2015. They haven't set an opening date, that we know of, but their opening should coincide with the completion of the work on I-55."

While many cities struggle with the growing pains associated with large numbers of construction projects, Cook said there have been few complaints from local businesses, including those around the future Sam's Club site.

"That's about the only significant road-closing we've had," he said. "When MDOT is working on Madison Avenue, there are periods of time when they close Grandview Boulevard and intersection there.

"Thankfully, we haven't had any major complaints because we try to pay attention to that sort of thing, and work with the crews to make sure traffic doesn't bottleneck to the point that it disrupts anyone's ability to do business."

On top of navigating the traffic problems that often accompany construction, the city has also worked to secure grants that will make the city more accessible through alternate modes of transportation.

Madison recently received a $450,000 grant to extend it's multipurpose trail along Rice Road, north of Madison Avenue, that will tie the existing trail into Madison Upper and Lower Elementary Schools.

Another grant for $30,000 will pay to bridge the gap between the city of Ridgeland's multi-use trail and Madison's near the Natchez Trace Parkway on Old Canton Road.

Three new baseball fields are currently being designed for Liberty Park - located on Madison Avenue near Grandview Boulevard - that will be ready to host games by spring 2015 at the latest.

"All of this," Bryant said, "will enhance the terrific atmosphere that makes Madison such a great place to live and conduct business."

All this good news, yet it seems like Madison has become the capitol of identity theft lately. More than 30 reports of identity theft have been reported in the month of November for the city.

The new gas station on Gluckstadt will house a Baskin-Robbins within the strip mall. There will also be two other businesses but they haven't been announced yet.

Is this the same gas station residents were trying to prevent from being built at Stribling Road & Catlett Road? I remember awhile back a gas station being proposed for that area and residents going bonkers over it like it wasn't gonna be expected in a growing community.

Or is this gonna be somewhere at Gluckstadt Road & I-55?

This is on Gluckstadt. Not on Catlett. Near Paul Anthonys Market.

Speaking of Gluckstadt, is there still a push for incorporation there?

What, for Mayor Hawkins-Butler to incorporate Gluckstadt into Madison? Well probably so. Although if you look on Google Maps, most of the streets and neighborhoods are labeled as Madison anyway so I think it's basically just assumed that Gluckstadt is a part of Madison. Although I think I'd be against it, as it would stop Gluckstadt from growing as a separate, unique community. It wouldn't be it's own per say!
