Hi, I'm from California. I am planning to move to Jackson, MS. It will just be me alone. I heard crime is pretty bad out here. I like rainy weather though. The south always seemed cool to me too. How is it out there for a person living alone. I am a male for your information!

The crime is bad, and there are many rundown areas. There are better cities to move to.

1. Head to the Mississippi thread and you'll see Jackson sub-thread.
2. Listen to LOCALS first and foremost from an unbiased view.
3. Crime varies and as usual it's the most impoverished neighborhoods hit hardest.
4. Research more and find what fits you personally & career wise.
5. Welcome to Mississippi and enjoy yourself.

Peace

Overall it's just like most other cities in the South, if you distribute them by size. Memphis, Little Rock, Birmingham, Macon, Montgomery, Atlanta - all mostly the same, except for size. Similar demographics, similar crime. Most all of them have largely poor areas that are run down. They all have suburbs that are fairly nice. They all have downtowns that are decent and walkable with good restaurants.

There are also very good areas of all these cities. Just don't be stupid, and don't think it's all peaches and rainbows. Research the areas you plan to visit.

If you like rainy weather, go to the Pacific Northwest. If you like high humidity and hot weather from March to October, then the South is for you.

Jackson doesn't have a downtown that is decent and walkable.

There are good restaurants but I guarantee you you do not want to be walking from point A to point B anywhere in Jackson. The nice stuff is all so spread out. The abyss that separates the nice areas is not a place you want to be when the sun goes down.

Please stop giving advice about Jackson.

Downtown Jackson is mostly commercial, with three restaurants (that have stood the test of time) open at night, only one of them, The Parlor Market, is a hip place. There are a few apartments but geared for professionals who work downtown. You certainly don't walk downtown at night (office people clear out by 5:30 and only the homeless are left). There are a few bars and other restaurants that come and go. Again none are walkable at night.

Fondren is the hip part of town, with several restaurants and a few bars, again be careful walking at night. Other than Fondren Public, not much is happening past 9:00 in the evenings.

There are a few other happening places spread out through Jackson, but not walkable.

Hi, Guy!

You couldn't have selected a more magical and soulful new hometown, than 'Jackson, The City with Soul'!

I'll introduce you to Jackson's major movers and shakers and unforgettable personalities, just to give you a sense of the warmth and wonder which await you!

First, since Jackson is the State Capital, we'll introduce Governor Phil Bryant (aka 'Feel Bouffant' Secret behind governor's perfect coif revealed, aka Governor Anita Bryant): A staunch proponent of the 'Take Your Gun to Church Movement' (Gov. Bryant signs guns in churches bill) Feel works tirelessly and subtly, to keep Mississippi's Democrats from "murdering children" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23B-O7cRA7s), public servants from being "forced" to facilitate Gay Marriage, and much, much more. People spotting Lance Bass's to-die-for white Mercedes Maybach in Jackson, last year, tuned in to the news, to hear Bass say a thing or two about Governor Bouffant: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIzx0e5iO3w. And thanks to Guvnurrrr Feel, you won't have to worry about the state's perpetually entertaining Dukes-of-Hazzard-style flag disappearing from the skyline, anytime soon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsF2yFwG8PE).

The flag wields so much talismanic power, it's almost a colorful character, all by itself. Attorney (and now Judge) Carlos Moore maintained that the very sight of the flag gave him heart problems and insomnia (Judge Carlton Reeves dismisses Mississippi flag lawsuit by Carlos Moore | Daily Mail Online). Judge Carlos is up in Jacktown quit a bit, these days.

Speaking of Colorful, there's Jill Conner Browne, the Sweet Potato Queen. Authoress (https://www.amazon.com/Jill-Conner-Browne/e/B001IGSTW6), movement leader, and parade impresario, Browne revolutionized Saint Patrick's Day for Mississippi. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOqzfbuGagg

And what would Jackson be, without The Stokeses? Kenneth and LaRita cut a wide swath through Jackson Society. Style-setters and aesthetes (A Night of Opera | The Jackson Advocate), they also maintain high standards (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGOZgmuwvB4) for law enforcement (https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...-rocks-n488906) and jurisprudence (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAeg9xzW5Ws).

Meet Jacktown's newest Mayor, who vows to make Jackson 'The Most Radical City on the PLANET' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKxKNOXumJc). This is apparently part of the 'Jackson-KUSH Plan', which is quite something ("Chokwe Lumumba Talks about the 'Jackson-Kush' Plan on 'Solidarity' Site" by Politics Blog | Jackson Free Press | Jackson, MS)

Becoming 'The Most Radical City on the Planet' should be a breeze, considering Jackson's wealth of transcendent community leaders. Gwendolyn Chapman wowed the world, with her proposals, when she ran for the mayoritorial position, a few years back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQsnaD0hTaI

There's always Country Club of Jackson resident, Pam Nail ('Mrs World'), who could be recruited to keep the populace fit (https://www.facebook.com/pageantpers...52518937799023), which might mesh well with Pamela Anderson's Vegan Challenge to Mayor Lumumba (https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/...nge/496945001/).

Would-be Commissioner of Agriculture Addie Green, is on hand to revolutionize Jackson Gardens, with her 'A Hoe at Every Home Program' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhdQfHB_5_A). Longtime community organizer Enoch Sanders is there to add wisdom (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMew0oidFmw), and community activist Ineva Pittman is already experienced in watching over the city's water supply (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ln92NH7zmg4).

I MUST end this list, with former Mayor, Tony Yarber, whom I always considered to absolutely ooze sexiness. Well, It appears I wasn't wrong. Despite being a man of the cloth, Mayor Tony authored a book on keeping the woman in your life satisfied (https://www.amazon.com/Man-Tips-Tony.../dp/B00AA31Z1A) . And his activities while Mayor, are LEGENDARY: UPDATED: Woman Sues Mayor Yarber for Sex Discrimination, Mayor Calls Her 'Disgruntled' | Jackson Free Press | Jackson, MS When he was running, I said, "Out of all the candidates (and there were some hotties running that year), HE is the one I think would be the most fun in a Jacuzzi." I know how to pick 'em. Woof! Tony has got the magnetism.
