Madam I hope you realize your comment about

Moderator cut: please watch your language
post has tramatized me, probably for life.

I hope it works out for you. Let us know how the plans are working out.
I hope you were joking about the pickled alligator meat. I don't know of any sources for that around here. You might try using chicken. It tastes just like alligator meat

OMY GOD I pray you live next door to me.

You're hilarious!!!! (like me)

Sorry I traumatized you.

GUESS WHAT THO?

I told one of my biz partners the same thing. Replace the gator
meat (from Louisiana) with chicken.

Actually, it doesn't taste as good w/chicken so we might substitute
pastrami.

It's REALLY GOOD w the gator meat tho.

I decided to make one big post containing several questions about different areas of the Jackson METRO area.

BTW--I think the people of Mississippi are the best I've ever met
anywhere in America. Please answer whichever questions you like.

#1--Everybody on the Forums keeps talking about "The Delta." They mention Vicksburg a lot, but is Jackson Metro area part of the The Delta as well? no

#2--How horrible are the mosquitoes during summertime? I hear MONSTER horror stories by people outside Mississippi. They say you can't
enjoy the beauty of summer because of Humid Heat and Ferocious Mosquitoes. HOW BAD IS IT REALLY?BAD-unless you live in a neighborhood that has a bug man come by...i have had two friends who have been hospitalized for west nile...

#3--Is there any Gambling Casinos or Gambling spots within the city of Jackson itself? How about the towns surrounding Jackson like Madison,
Ridgeland and Brandon? (*I hear Madison is the real "snobby" area, btw).
no, you will have to go to tunica or vicksburg. i personally would LOVE to live in madison-that's where all the newest stuff is being built. and it depends where in madison you live(snooty factor). ridgeland and brandon are good places to live.

#4--My hope is to build a home in Raymond and invest in rebuilding Downtown Jackson. I am Black, but I am upper class (not BORN upper class, but I am assuming I will be considered that). fonderon area is a good place that has rebuilt-it's got a bunch of good places to eat.

I would like to open the first "African Pizza" in Jackson (talk about delicious pizza!), a dance club in Jackson and a nighttime bookreader's cafe/country music spot (these latenight book cafes are popular in places like San Francisco, Ca. but without the country music--they don't
carry "porn" of any kind; it's like a Starbucks that opens at 7 pm
with coffee, book readings and guy playing guitar singing Willie Nelson
tunes). make sure you have plenty of burglary bars and glass windows that are brick-throwing proof. and at night is usually when the thugs come out.

I am part of a group of people who want to "reinvent" the downtown section of Jackson so that it will draw positive media attention, more developement and keep the "younger, more hip" citizens who already live in Jackson Metro from Leaving the state. most(but certainly not all)of the younger, more hip citizens down here have a totally different mindframe from what you are talking about. you would be better off investing in real estate. as a matter of fact, there are lots of people from california who buy rental properties down here......

MY QUESTION on #4 IS this--are we wasting our time? Is downtown Jackson a lost case?i wouldn't...not until melton cleans it up some more and gets rid of these abonded properties and buildings and thugs....it's hard to establish a business when you have thieves stealing the minute you walk away from it...alot of business have closed down and moved because of the crime and theft-they cannot afford to stay in business and being robbed and stolen from....

#5--Because Jackson is part of the Bible Belt, do you think you would
be resentful about having a Dance club in the city (downtown)? Our plan is to call it "The Alibi" and feature a hiphop side and a techno/dance side divided by a large pond with dancing mermaid girls on platforms placed throughout the pond. How late do you think it should stay open without people of Jackson complaining?don't know because you wouldn't catch me downtown late at night...make sure to have security bars...

#6--What's your thoughts about the Two Lakes/Pearl River Island plan?
I personally was very disappointed when they chose to build an Airport
Freeway rather than the lake/island casino. BUT THAT'S JUST ME.
Are you happy about the renovation of King Edward and new lofts? Do you think it's going to help change the face of Jackson in a good way?hope so.....

#7--I notice 99% of our White brothers and sisters on the Forum report that Jackson is INFESTED with crime and that the school system in Jackson is HORRIBLE. yes, i can vouch for that...

But on t.v. here in California the other day, Forest Hills High in Jackson was named one of the best High schools in the South. i highly doubt that. it's not far from battlehill park-NOT an area i would want my kids to be near...(or yours..)

I am wondering if there are any African-American members of the forum who can paint a different picture of Jackson? Is it really so dangerous to live in Jackson and are the public schools really that horrible or is this a slightly paranoid "perception" by those who don't actually live in Jackson?

I have to admit that I'm builidng my house in Raymond "partly" because of the constant claims that Jackson is so dangerous and uncooth. (Also partly because I need acreage and would like to live in a country setting with close access to the city--I found that the acres in Raymond
were much cheaper than the ones in Flowood and Brandon and more
lush and green as well).

#8--What is up with this crazy Mayor in Jackson? Is his REP just a
myth or is he really that unconventional and eccentric?although he might not have a good rep, at least he's TRYING to do SOMETHING about the problems in jackson. im GLAD to see these abandoned homes torn down to make some of these streets more liveable!!

#9--On YOUTUBE they have videos of this year's LINE STORMS hitting
Jackson, MS and (-gulp-) my future town of Raymond. In one video
they had sirens going off! mississippi is known for flooding as well as tornados-i would still say oklahoma, ect is far worse. you have to watch out for the huge oak and pine trees from straight winds falling on your homes than from the tornados...

How often have Tornadoes hit the Jackson area? Is Raymond a major
recepticle for Tornadoes? Are they really big ones or just storms? Is
there anyone on the forum who wants to leave Raymond due to fear
of Tornadoes getting worse????seems like they happen every time the seasons start to change-btw, the seasons here are summer-winter; winter-summer...maybe a week here and there of fall and spring...they are not any worse than anywhere else..

#10--What are the KNOWN flood zones around Jackson? Places that
you would be afraid to buy land or live on because you know that section is FLOOD-PRONE.down here they will let you know when you purchase a home(or they are supposed to), also your home insurance would know...houses that have raised foundations or are on blocks are an indicator....

_________

**I didn't want to litter the forum with a bunch of threads, so I hope you don't mind I asked all my questions this way. Thanks.
Shelby, I agree with just about everything you said. However, Forest Hill isn't close to Battlefield Park. It's way out Raymond Road. I don't think the Mayor has succeeded in doing much to clean up the city. I heard on the news this morning that there have been 41 murders so far this year in the city. I admire Sheriff McMillan, but I think maybe having him be police chief and sheriff may be too big a job.

i agree on that sheriff mcmillian..you were right about forest hill, when i re-looked it up, it had one place near battlefield park-some kind of counselors place for forest hill. i think in general it is a challenge for anyone to clean up jackson. i have drove down many streets in south and west that have had abandoned houses that are not fit to live in torn down. you know where the bums and the like stayed right?? in those houses...but yes, the murders are too high-i can't even watch the news anymore, esp when my kids are around. the parents of some of these young kids are very irresponsible too--remember the cases these past weeks of the 3 yr olds- one having a gun in the car with an unbuckled 3 year old while BOTH parents go into the convience store at 12 midnight....crazy....

I know the story you're talking about, Shelby. I feel sorry for the people who really care about their neighborhoods but they're afraid to come out of their houses at night. You hear so many reports of people whose homes or businesses have been broken into numerous times. It makes me sad.

me too auntbee. we have a dear old elderly friend. her husband recently passed away. when they bought their home about 40 years ago, it was a nice safe place to live. now this little old lady has these bars on her front and back doors and her windows. she keeps the doors with the bars on it locked. she has kept up with her house and the others around it are run down. it's just sad that her and her husband worked so hard to pay off their house and they cannot even enjoy it..

Jackson is part of the area known as the pine belt.

The reason there are no casinos in Jackson, unless things have changed, is because they must be on an indian reservation, or a navigable waterway. I guess the pearl river/reservoir does not fit into this category.

There have been several succesful coffeeshops in Jackson that were not Starbucks.

Are they finally going to do something with King Edward, its been a discussion for years to renovate.

Default Here you go ClaudeWilson...

1. The Delta is not part of Metro Jackson, but it is a very beautiful rural area that rivals areas anywhere else in the US (and I just did 48 states in a Semi for CR England). A culturally rich area which gave birth to blues, and you will never have better barbeque, or late summer parties where you can meet the cousins from Chicago, and see Aunt Centye who's 106 yrs old! Antibellum homes going back to civil war times as well. You can still find moonshine made by families who have been doing it since the depression! Now that's culture!
2. Mosquitos are aggressive, and they do carry West-Nile! When the sun falls, the feast begins.
3. Gambling is 30 mins from, Jackson to the West in Vicksburg, where there is alot of Civil-war landmarks & the Mississippi river. Legally they can't be on Land, so everybody says "Going to the Boat". That's code for travelling to Vicksburg, and spending too much. The casinos are built on Pilings in the river, they are large, and the food is the best (Buffets). Don't go near the 1st of the month when the "Plain-Folks" get their county checks!
4. You've done your research if Your moving to Raymond, and helping to rebuild downtown will be a challenge for you. Farrish street is your best bet. My cousin Marshand Crisler is on city council, and he is pretty progressive, and may help you get things situated. However, Kennith Stokes from West Jackson, and the Mayor seem to never agree on the right way to do anything with this city. Benny Thomsoan tries to not show up until there's national coverage. With the exception of Jackson state, the infastructure of this city is neglected, and failing, due to lack of resolve, lack of investment, and high-crime.
5. Yes it is the heart of the "Bible-Belt", so Baptist is the only religion that counts down there, and choosing the right church may be the way to accomplish your goals with ease. A dance club is not a bad idea, Jackson BADLY needs more nightlife options, but most clubs have found that making a club too accessible means attracting the wrong demographic (Young black males). A shooting or stabbing is ot usually far behind. Look up the "Upper-level" dance club, and you'll get great background on our mayor, the city, and our problems. My suggestion is to open a club in Clinton, or maybe Ridgeland. you'll attract a better demographic, and Law-enforcement will meet your needs. JPD will supply off duty cops for your security in most cases.
6. Edwards Hotel is probably the key to revitalizing Jackson. It's an eyesore that symbolizes Jackson's glory days, and as long as it's derelict, so is the the pride of Jackson. Many people have tried over the years to buy it, and revitalize it, and I'm not sure how it's going now (I've been gone since June). I think city code, and burocracy makes it impossible to make any headway on the place. It will take a campaign, or a miracle to restore it, but if someone does, they will probably change the direction of Jackson. It will give the place a new beginning in everybody's mind, It really connects with those who were there when it was built, and left as it crumbled.
7. The crime in Jackson is out of control, I haven't checked in a few months, but it's not random violence like in some cities. Murders are usually tied to drugs, property crimes, or domestic issues, not gangs. I was close freinds with alot of officers in Precinct 2, which is South Jackson, and some in West Jackson (which is the highest crime area in Jackson, and also the Historical Civil Rights Area). Mostly Murders & Robberies, and after the Ernie Bean Gun Show, it's a circus for about a week as everybody tries out there new machines on whoever owes em some money, talks to their girlfreind, or who has a better grade of hair or skin. The mayor wants to shut down the gun show I beleive, but there's too much money in Murder and Mayhem for it to actually happen.
8. Frank Melton is doomed. He has the right idea- To come into the troubled city he loves, and to change it at all costs. he came in like a gang-buster, but he didn't didn't understand the vested interest people have in pointing fingers here. Everybody wants everybody else to stop doing illegal stuff, and Frank Went after ALL crime, and ruffled some tail-feathers, especially at the DA's office, and the Sherriff's department. They shut him down, and that's why he's on probation. Even better- I'm no saint, but I met a few high-level criminals in Jackson who freely admitted (And I've heard ALOT of stories) that "The Mayor" has controlling interest in Jackson's Drug trade, and wants to make the city "Safer" for him to control "Other" markets. And he either works for or is being investigated by the FBI. Who knows! Sounds like heresay to me!
9. You heard storm sirens on Youtube? Most of them don't work as of Katrina, cause I was there, and I heard that on the NEWS! Most of them don't work.
10. Flood plane is anywhere south of the Ross Barnett Resevior, but more specifically, Downtown and South Jackson. I was there in about 2001 when downtown flooded. I was On Hooker st., in Bennie Thomson's "Chalet Village" apartments. A perfect picture of a "Crack-Ghetto" abandoned buildings, and a whole generation of lost souls. It rained for about 3 days, and the drainage system coulnd't take it. Water backedup everywhere, and alot of business sustained damage. We camcorded our ghetto people swimming in our new lake, and what I wouldn't do to have that footage back! As they say: "It was the best and worst of times" on Hooker st.!
You won't get better info than that! I'm rastin006@hotmail.com if you need any further info. I hope this helped you out!
