Hello All,

Searching for some basic answers. I'm not familiar with Jackson, MS -- but I'm moving there the end of January (2009). Looking for some apartments close to downtown or Belhaven/Fondren area for $500-600 -- Is this possible?

Also, any good healthclubs to join? Particularly one with racquetball? Any suggestions on how/where to meet some mid-twenties professionals to start a social network? aaaaannnnnnnndddd what's the best part of Jackson, Mississippi?

ANY information would be greatly appreciated - Thanks!

You should be able to find something for that. Are you wanting a 1 BR or would you be ok with roommates? You can get a nice place for that much if you have roommates, but I can understand you wanting a 1 BR since you don't know anyone here. There is a brand new gym downtown that just opened called the Courthouse, they have several locations around the metro area. If you're wanting to meet some people, Fondren has a couple of coffee shops that lots of people hang out at, and if you attend church, there are tons of them to choose from in Jackson.

As for the best part of Jackson, I would recommend downtown, Fondren, or Belhaven. There are apartments in all of these places, and Fondren and Belhaven have rental houses as well. There are plenty of people our age (I'm 26) here, you just have to meet the right ones in order to tap into the broader network. Last year, I lived in a loft apartment downtown and became close friends with one of my neighbors there, and he had been there for 7 years so he introduced me to many more than I would met otherwise. Do a search on Jackson apartments, lofts, and rentals and see what you come up with. If you need more specifics, send me a PM.

My niece lives on King's Highway not too far from the school of medicine where her husband is studying. That neighborhood is charming and full of young professionals. Sorry, I don't know much about rental prices.

King's Highway runs into my street at the end. It is a great area, full of character and great people.

Congrats! Belhaven is a great place, within walking distance of several nice restaurants, pubs, and grocery store.

Belhaven is an excellent choice. Aside from meeting people in the night life, there are some churches or Faiths that have really fun activities for Singles. Some are more oriented to the white collar than others.

Professional organizations or Civic clubs, hobby clubs, etc will be helpful. Try them on for size. You may find your interests are more varied than you think. Get your feet wet, wade in, and if you are interesting, they will be interested.

Btw, Belhaven is a social neighborhood and next to Belhaven College. It does have a social status that is helpful to find contemporaries.
Best of Luck
