I live in Julington Creek Plantation area - it's long island-y to me (more similar to Suffolk than Nassau) and where I'm located is ideal for access to downtown Jax or to St. Augustine.

Most of Jax outside of the urban core seems to be pretty suburban - some areas are much nicer/safer than others (as with any city). But, San Marco and Riverside and Avondale are nice, older, suburban areas much closer to the downtown area than where I'm located. If you have kids the schools in that area aren't horrible, but St. Johns are rated higher so there's that.

If schools aren't a concern, I'd check out those areas.

Jacksonville is like any other big city. We rented a 3/2 in Jacksonville Heights (not a bad area, despite what others on this forum have said) for 900 a month. Had a fireplace, all tile floors, a screen room on the back and a HUGE yard. I'm from South Florida and the difference could not be greater. A house like the one we rented in Jacksonville would go for about $1,800 in South Florida. Also, I found the people in Jacksonville to be much friendlier and I had never seen any incidents of overt racism. Jacksonville is a very diverse City. There are areas that you should avoid at night just like anyone with common sense would. Avoid any streets with a dead presidents name on them and you should be fine :-)
