I just hopped on the Jax. board yesterday and heard a couple mentions of a fishing ban. If such a thing exists, why? How far south does one have to travel if he/she wants to fish? Is there a website that explains the situation?

I'm not sure about a fishing ban - haven't heard anything. I know there's a federal plan to ban red snapper fishing to protect its numbers, but that's not in place yet.

You may have heard about the algae bloom on the St Johns River and how the icky green is not something one wants to swim in or boat in, and it is toxic to the fish.

It's not stopping to many boaters from getting on the river.

The Atlantic Ocean's red snapper ban is indeed in effect, through December at the earliest. It's crap, and it's based on junk science provided by an anti-fishing group. Any fisherman who goes offshore will catch so many red snapper it'll make your head spin. It's like passing on a ban on killing mosquitos on the grounds that the bugs are endangered...you and I both know them boogers are legion around here!

That said, there's TONS of other kinds of fishing to do in FL. Freshwater or saltwater, there are scores of fish you can catch and keep, and only a handful you can't. Most fish have size and/or bag limits, so be sure to check regulations before coming.
