I don't know if we have any human resources professionals on this forum, but I have a question for anyone who may be able to give me a plausible answer.

A few weeks ago I was contacted via email through LinkedIn by a member of the Human Resources Department at a local bank. She mentioned in the email that she had browsed my profile on Linkedin and thought I would be a good fit for a position with her organization. I did nothing to reach out to her for this, or any other, position.

Being happily employed, I am not actively seeking employment. However, I feel it would be foolish to discard any future potential career move that would be for the betterment of my family, I sent a response asking a few questions about the position. (Keep in mind her email to me mentioned that if I had any questions I should ask, and she left her email and phone number)

Fast forward two weeks later, and she had not responded to my questions, so I called her. No response to my phone call. Another week, I call again and got her on the phone. At this point I am really more curious than anything about how she could reach out to me and then completely ignore my questions. We had a cordial conversation and she mentioned the position was filled internally, blah, blah. There were other positions though....I got the answers to the questions that I had about the original position on those positions, thanked her for her time and thats it.

My question is this: How can a human resources person possibly justify this type of behavior? I don't know if she did a keyword search on the Jacksonville LinkedIn and sent out a blanket email to all of them (which I suspect she did) or what. The fact remains that she reached out to me, and I took the time to respond to her inquiry. At minimum she owes it to me to respond to my response. I know the job market is pretty tough right now so I guess HR departments are used to getting away with this type of behavior, but it really puts a black eye on the organization for me now. I highly doubt that I would ever be interested in working for that company, which may be a significant detriment to the company if I am a superstar employee. (I certainly think that I am )

I thought about telling her how unprofessional I thought her behavior was...and that I believed that any employee who performs the primary function of their job so poorly does not deserve their paycheck...but we pretty much live in a corporate nanny state anyway.

Anyway I am curious to her what the general consensus is on this. I believe that HR departments should respond to every job seeker as soon as the position has been filled. I know that is pretty much on the wayside now, but I think it is especially unprofessional for an organization to seek out prospective employees directly and then not respond after doing so.

Are you sure she is who she said she was? I have received calls and emails from people claiming they had a job that I was perfect for, only to find out they were some sleazy headhunter or scam artist. I would call the bank and get in touch with the HR person through the bank to verify you really talked to her, and not some scam artist.

She was who she says she was.

Her email was name@xxbank.com. Her number was local and went to her which she answered "x bank HR, name speaking." Her profile on linkedin says she is a human resources professional with x bank. I spoke with her directly. The other positions she talked about when we spoke were with x bank.

In general, I agree with you... but let me be sure I understand. You expect professionalism and responsibility in the work setting? Here?? When it happens, I find it to be a pleasant surprise, certainly not the norm.

Unfortunately, it happens every day. With all the corporate cutbacks, the HR people have not been spared, leaving more work to do in the time available for niceties such as being polite to applicants.
