Are any of you asthmatic, or have asthmatic children and have relocated to the Jacksonville area? How has the weather affected you or your children's asthma? I know that people have different triggers, and I am concerned of my daughter's health with our move to the area. Her main trigger is her allergies, and really cold weather (and we live in upstate New York- need I say more?). I'm just wondering how some of you have adapted to the climate. Thanks!

Allergies are definitely a problem here as we have a longer growing season due to the warm weather. It generally does not get cold enough to bother my or our four kids' asthma but the heat as it is now is bothersome. Even when we wait to walk at night or early morning, we still have to bring an inhaler just in case. There are plenty of good pediatric allergists and pulmo groups in this area to choose from.

Don't know what allergies she has - but various parts of town (including mine) have miserable pollen seasons in the spring. I don't have any allergies - but I know some people who basically can't go outside for any length of time during pollen season. Robyn

This is probably the worst place to live for a kid with asthma!!! My sons best friend had severe asthma and passed away his first week of school because of the weather which triggered and attack, and the negligence of his teacher. My mother has had asthma since she was young and it got worse when she moved here. My kids have bad allergies but when we leave the state they get much better.

My wife has asthma, not real bad though, but still must take 1/4 tablet of Zyrtec each day.....she is 62 yrs old. Last time she used an inhaler was 4 to 5 years ago when we lived south of Denver, CO. Basically the Fall season/Oct is the worst here for her, but it can also get a little wicked for her in the Spring during "blooming" season. But, even with that, we still love living here.

How tragic for your friend...this used to be my worst nightmare, sending them off to school and hoping that if an attack came on their teacher would know how to respond quickly and appropriately.

As for this being the worst area for asthmatics, it all depends upon their triggers. If cold weather is a trigger than they won't experience that here often (although we did this past winter for a few weeks, ugh).

the spring is terrible!

My friend lives a little north of us in Georgia and they are moving soon and she is looking forward to it. She said the allergies/sinus issues she suffers here are worse than anywhere else.

Seasonal allergies are a main trigger for my sons asthma. The worst time for us is the spring....the pollen is tremendous here. My son take singulair nightly and uses his puffers when needed. There are other precautions that we must take including showering every night before bed and this last spring we never opened our windows.

I work at Baptist Health, the ER at Wolfson Childrens Hospital is very busy with Asthma patients ALL YEAR LONG. I don't have asthma, but I don't have allergy symptoms anymore living here, compared to St. Louis. I haven't taken allergy medicine in the 4 years I've been here.
