I grew up in 32208 in the 1960's. It was a fun place then. Everything was new and exciting. Lived in Sherwood Forest. Often went to the Ribault Drive-In (saw the BATMAN movie from the TV Series there). Bands would come and play at the Biff Burger in the Pic N' Save/Colonial shopping center. The only 'dive' I remember back then was the Sherwood Bowling Lanes. It didn't last long and was closed after a major fire. All of that left in the late 60's, early 70's with the black population moving in. It wasn't long before crime shot through the roof and stores closed or burglar bars went up on the ones that remained. I moved away to the country in the Central States. I just visited Jacksonville last week, hoping to see some improvement. Sadly, there are some nice areas, but most of the places I remember look like a battle zone (Northside, Gateway Shopping Center, Springfield, etc). It would be nice if Jax could find a way to stop tearing down trees to build and just tear down sections of Jax and build. It's crazy. I pass one run down shopping center with only one store left in it and a block away someone has cleared land to build another shopping center.
