I have been wondering why I see so many small children in vehicles without booster seats (we require up to age 7 in RI) and then I see todays article in the Times Union, Florida is one of three states that do not require any type of seat over age three. I know we did not have them when I was growing up in the 60's but my parents did not travel as much as we do today on a daily basis. I learn something new about Florida everyday.

Chances of booster seat law passing appear slim in Florida | jacksonville.com

I had no idea there was an age law anywhere, have always heard about weight limits/laws. But I know that when you call the HWP for Florida, they tell you that car seats or booster seats are required for children under 40 or might have been 60lbs.

(I just called because I needed to make sure a booster seat would work or if I need to locate a larger car seat for a 4 year old that is on the small side)

They don't want to inconvenience the folks traveling to Disney by making them haul car seats and boosters. And we don't want to get the soccer moms mad by telling them they have to actually have seatbelts and boosters for the 10 5-year olds they just piled into their 7-passenger minivan.

What's the point? If you want your kids to be in a booster seat, put them in a booster seat. Do we need a law?

Most likely, even if we had a law, a number of parents wouldn't follow it! Simply speaking, it's the "day and age" we are living in where people say "you're not going to tell me what to do!".

Good point, I did not realize Florida's lower standard of child restraint laws, thats where I was coming from. It's each childs parents choice to make their own decision. In the past I have seen so many toddlers without restraints and always wondered why.

my bad, thought you were bashing it. I don't see many toddlers without restaints. I know my friends keep their kids in boosters until the magic 4 foot nine height number.

Generally people will do what the law tells them they *have* to do. If the law says a 4 year old is safe in a seatbelt, then by golly a 4 year old must be safe in a seatbelt.

Spend an hour in an elementary school car rider lane. It's full of little tiny kids in front seats, kids sharing seatbelts or not using one at all, and kids that definitely need a booster seat just hopping into the car and tucking the shoulder belt behind them because it is uncomfortable.

My 7 almost 8 year old is still in a booster seat. He's so SKINNY. He's not even 60lbs yet. The other day the neighbor kid saw my son's booster and teased him. My kid doesn't really care because he can see better when he's in it and I feel better because I feel he's safer in the booster.
