Several years ago I passed through Montreal on my way back to the States. I asked an Air Canada agent where I picked my bags up to go through customs (since I was changing airlines, I wasn't sure whether my bags would be at Air Canada or American). He answered me in French.

Default Awwwwh....

Sorry you don't like it here but remember every place has it's good and bad and only we can choose to make the most of the situation. Jacksonville has alot of hidden gems and you can find them if you choose to be open to everything not saying that you are not or haven't been but just in general. You do have a point about the funky coffee shops , I often wish they could have alot of those downtown like the ones I read about like in New York.

What point are you trying to make?

I'll bet that if a French Canadian was passing through Jacksonville, on the way back to Canada, and happened to ask a customs agent a question, I'm pretty sure that the answer he would get back would be in English. Funny how that works. People tend to speak in their native language.

How strange that you feel they have more of a responsibility to speak your language in their Country, than you do to speak theirs, while visiting their Country.

Like them or not, the French Canadian people have just as much right to be proud of their heritage and native culture, as we do here in the USA.

I don't know the specific details surrounding your experience, but I've travelled to 30 different Countries around the World, and had the chance to observe first hand the frequent 'entitled' behavior of American tourists. Think about how you feel whenever a tourist or recent transplant from up North, starts telling you how things are done where they come from, and how that is so much better than the way it's done down here. Having seen what I've seen, I can well understand how officials and citizens from other Countries could occasionally lose patience with American visitors.
