As of 2011, Where are the Safe Areas of Jax?

Crime Map of Jacksonville: JSO | Jacksonville Sheriffs Office Disclamer (http://maps.coj.net/crimestatsdiscl.asp - broken link)

You'll see a lot of crime in Riverside, relatively speaking, so you might not think it's safe. A woman (maybe 2) was raped there not too long ago. There's break-ins pretty regularly. Vandalsim. Drive by shooting left someone paralyzed a year or so ago. Just last week a couple was robbed at gun point walking between bars. It's also next to a sketchy part of town too.

These are all facts that paint an "unsafe picture", no?

Well, Riverside & Avondale historic district is probably the most popular area of Jacksonville, and there are tons of families and young single females there. It's vibrant.

Wait...wouldn't they be scared to death form all the crime? Don't these descriptions conflict?

No. Crime happens everywhere. Beaches (check). Southside suburbs (check). Westside (check). Downtown (check). Orange Park (check).

People's perception of "safe" is extremely subjective. Extremely.

So, generally speaking, the Northwest geographical area of Jacksonville is really the only that is uniformly unsafe, i'd say. Pretty much everywhere else has spots of great and spots of not so great.

probably the safest spot in jacksonville would be a private cell in the duval county jail... ironically.

What about the bug/roach issue so many people bring up with Florida. I know it is hot and hubid and the roaches are all around--but some say they are so large and well trained, they could do your dishes

thoughts?

There are palmetto bugs but just about the only time your going to see them is if its been raining real hard for awhile and its about flooding out. Then they will come up to your place to get out of the water. Thats if your a neat person and you spray for bugs, if your a pig and have a bug problem then its all bets off.

Clean up, spray, slide some Harris Famous Roach tabs under your fridge and other dark places, and that should take care of it.

What a great resource, wish I'd found this forum earlier

Me and my family will moving down to Jacksonville at the end of August for a job promotion.

We have everything set except a place to live (ya, a big part of the move)!

I'll be working near Baptist Medical Center South near the intersection of Old St Augustine Road and I95 in zip code 32258.

More info:
It would be me, my wife and our 17Mo. old grandson.
We're long term renters looking to rent a 3bedroom home for no more than $1k a month. We'd like to avoid apartments/condos if possible.
Willing to drive up to 30 miles to/from work.
Don't care much for nightlife, clubs etc. (will drive if we want to do something )
Schools are not an issue cause our grandson is only with us short term and we won't be having any kids.
Looking for a quiet, safe area we can afford thats hopefully not too far from beaches

I heard good things about Fruit Cove, Mandarin & Julington Creek but apparently their out of my price range.
The areas between the beaches and the 9A freeway to the west seem like a good choice too but I haven't been finding anything for rent in there.

Any help/advice at all would be greatly appreciated!

PS: Any recommendations for rent listings? I've been using craigslist and floridarentals.com but any other good ones would be helpful cause we need to secure a place before moving
