I have said it before and I will say it again:

A casino.

That's what we need downtown. It will draw people from far and wide and put money in the city coffers. I am not talking Vegas or Atlantic City but a little controlled gambling will liven up the city, not to mention jobs and a venue for conferences. Too radical an idea? Well downtown Jacksonville is dead, we need some bold innovations.

^^^ I like it! Maybe even get a Mississippi style gambling riverboat to dock downtown also. Go out on a dinner cruise and gamble the night away, with some good entertainment thrown in, in the lounge area.

A casino is a gimmick, plus FBC would throw so much salt in that idea. Jacksonville people can come off as boring to other people outside. This thread is not really about people being downtown, its a subliminal jab at FSU and city supporter from the suburbanites lol, by using the Occupy Jacksonville movement that has seemed to be faded away.

Fly, in case you missed it, this thread has moved on. We are now talking about making downtown a more vibrant place long after the Occupy Jacksonville movement is a distant memory. You can disagree with the idea of a casino and call it a gimmick but what are your solutions to liven up downtown Jax? Forget about more lights, more parking, new parks, none of that is going to bring people from the suburbs or the outlying areas into downtown Jacksonville. Ya gotta think outside the box man!

Actually I started this thread for exactly the purpose I stated - to talk about people being downtown on weekends - any people.

We went to MOCA yesterday - and the Occupy JAX people were in Hemming Park (until about 3 - when they went to Main Street because of a religious program that is held in Hemming Park every Saturday afternoon). Paper said there were about 200 people - but I'd estimate 100-150 + 50 of the usual residents of Hemming Park.

BTW - the exhibits at MOCA now (all photography) are pretty good - especially the Gilman collection. Takes about an hour to see everything.

I had to shake my head yesterday though at how dumb people are. There were a whole lot of people at MOCA yesterday - for some movie at the film festival. Now the film festival tickets did not include admission to MOCA - and apparently almost no one from the film festival was willing to pay the 7 or 8 bucks (5 bucks for seniors) to see the museum. Now how hard would it have been for the film festival people to contact the MOCA people and negotiate some kind of deal for museum admission for the film festival people that would be included in the price of the film festival ticket? So more people could be exposed to MOCA - and possibly join.

Anyway - the MOCA people told us that are zero people from Occupy JAX stopping into the museum. (Although it was obvious to me that some could afford it - I saw people with expensive computers in Hemming Park - a teacher grading papers - etc. - etc.). They apparently are using the main library for their sanitary needs. FWIW - the MOCA people also said they get some bums from time to time - especially the older ones - over 60 - who get a senior discount. The bathrooms are more private - and cleaner.

Finally - if - as claimed - a lot of the people are protesting student loan payments - they have cause for complaint IMO. One of the signs I saw yesterday said "Eliminate the Deficet". And - it seems that the protests will move over to the Riverside Arts Market next weekend. That will be interesting. Robyn

P.S. to Cricketfan - I don't think the gambling idea would work in downtown downtown because downtown downtown is pretty crowded during business hours on weekdays (at least it has been the few times I've been there in the last couple of years). And a gambling place has to be open during weekday business hours.

I guess I should mention a few other things. We went to the library for a while - to see what was going on. It wasn't super crowded - but there were a fair number of people there. And a substantial minority or perhaps a majority were bums. Most of the rest seemed to be black parents with children. I think the library has a lot of potential. But I also think most people - especially those with kids - will tend to avoid it as long as a large % of its permanent population is bums.

FWIW - I agree with this op-ed piece I read in the FTU this week:

We need to clear downtown of hoboes | jacksonville.com

Finally - our parking in the library parking garage was supposed to be free with validation (on a Saturday). But it wasn't. I didn't mind spending the 3 bucks - but I suspect some people who haven't planned spending the money for parking will be po'd and won't be back. Robyn

This is exactly why I feel those folks on MetroJacksonville should partake on city-data...some of them do, but the mods do not, probably for selfish reasons. I will admit those MetroJacksonville poster are a lot more involved in that topic than I am. I support downtown jax...both NorthBank & SouthBank, city-data/Jax has way more suburban supporters than urban supporters.

I'm not sure I get your point.

Well - for starters - there's no place to park that isn't relatively expensive (for JAX). OTOH - there's plenty of empty stuff just north of downtown downtown that might work. On the third hand - that area is pretty bleak looking. If I were looking to build any kind of recreational facility (including one where gambling was allowed) - I'd been looking for nice attractive waterfront property. Robyn
