I read allot on the forums that JAX is rednecky? how bad is it? I am not into rednecks, what areas are to avoid for that? are there any trendy and interesting areas? for non rednecks? Someone suggested that the YMCA is where people go when I asked about nightlife, is it that boring?

can someone please inform?

Think of Jacksonville as the capital of south Georgia and you'll have a pretty good grasp of the rednecky situation here. Not to say everyone's a redneck, but it's definitely a factor. Other than that, you'll just have to come and judge for yourself.

they're not necessarily a disease that you must avoid. I don't have daily or even weekly interaction with true rednecks, but there is a segment of the population that would fall under that banner, many of them proudly so, and their presence does shape Jacksonville's society to some degree.

There are clusters of nightlife in Riverside, San Marco, Downtown, Southside and the Beaches neighborhoods, as well as a few other places here and there...everywhere from Springfield to Mandarin. But, with a few exceptions, they are mostly slow except for the weekend.

To the OP, just out of curiosity ... What exactly is RedNecky, to you?

Some areas of Jax are a little redneck, but, hey, how can you isolate yourself from the world? It's all about a person's character rather than lifestyle. Some areas of Jacksonville are quite sophisticated, can you afford Epping Forest? or Beauclearc? or waterfront on the St. John's River? or Ponte Vedra Beach? Who knows? A redneck might save your life in an emergency.

Jax is a huge city/area, biggest in the US I believe (by area). It is bigger (by area) than London so you you will have a mix of everyone/everything. There are 5-10MM homes on the river then you have a ghetto a few blocks north of Jacksonville Landing so it is obviously a big city with wide swings in income levels. Being 30+/- miles from the GA state line you may have a "redneck" influence but I never felt it was solely a redneck area.

I would have to ask the same thing!
If it's people displaying the Confederate flag on their full-size trucks, then NO, none that we have seen anywhere in our area of Baymeadows and Mandarin (Southside)! And, definitely NOT in the SJTC area!
But, still curious about YOUR definition of a "Redneck".

Good question. Some people don't know what it means but they do know it is a derogatory term, so they use it anyway because it makes them feel superior.

Redneck is a historically derogatory slang term used in reference to poor white farmers, especially from the Southern United States. It is similar in meaning to cracker (especially regarding Georgia and Alabama), hillbilly (especially regarding Appalachia and the Ozarks), and white trash, but without the last term's suggestions of immorality. In recent decades, the term expanded its meaning to mean bigoted, loutish, and opposed to modern ways, and has often been used to attack Southern conservatives and racists. At the same time, some Southern whites have reclaimed the word, using it with pride and defiance as a self-identifier.
