Hi, all.

My family just moved to Jacksonville this summer, so I'm still learning the ins and outs. Does anyone here have a suggestion for a good martial arts program (preferrably taekwondo) for children? We live in Southside, near Arlington, and my 10-year-old son is interested in signing up for a program. He's still technically a beginner, although he was in a program for about a year when he was 6.

I'd appreciate any guidance you can send my way

Honestly, I feel a good wrestling program is a much better choice for a youngster. I've been practicing martial arts for years (over 20 now) and have come to the conclusion that martial arts such as karate, TKD, etc. aren't as useful for the younger kids as they lead us to believe (I did karate for a number of years when I was younger and have gravitated to jiu jitsu/wrestling.). I've found grappling is probably one of the best ways of keeping in shape for life (if they enjoy it of course) and is something which never is forgotten due to the amount of drilling, etc. you must do to learn it.

They also learn about controlling their weight since there are weight classes. Many wrestlers continue to watch their weight well into their old age.

I have stuck with jiu jitsu because I firmly believe grappling is one of the best things to know since most fights end up on the ground (I also bounced for a number of years and have seen it first hand).

I've also never been a fan of these schools with young kids who are black belts, etc. These schools are just about your money and that's about it. But I digress...

Seriously though, a good wrestling program goes a loooooong way in boosting confidence in a youngster. Tougher to find the programs here in FL than in NJ (where I'm from) but they're out there. I've seen some good clubs in the area for this sort of thing as well.
