Hey guys, buying a car today from a coworker. Gonna get insurance Friday, and try to get tags at the dmv as well. Anyone know what I'm looking at in costs? The dmv site is confusing.

Details

1. I have a FL driver's license but never owned a car here. Have registered a moped and have tag for that

2. Car is a FL car. 1993 Acura

Also, if I get insurance via online that day, how do I show proof at DMV? Just give them the number and they can look it up somehow?

Thanks a bunch

The General (so the commercial says) provides an insurance card online when you buy from them, just print it out.

We were right around $400/car in September. We have three cars, so that was a fun day.

The tax collector in Mandarin was an easy in and out, FWIW.

I was afraid of this.

A couple of people had mentioned a $400 price, but it just seemed ridiculously high to me. And I couldn't find anything on the dmv site that had any fee that seemed to be close to that.

Called someone who I knew had just bought a used car recently and they said 400ish as well.

WTF Florida? That has got to be the highest tag and title fee in the country.

I'll take this over the 5% income tax I had to pay in Illinois.

I found the DMV site astoundingly useless for calculating a price. Glad to know I'm not just challenged.

Yeah they hit you hard up front. Kinda sucks but I figure the (overall) cost of living is so awesome here I'll live with that.

Do you guys have to pay 12 months up front? In England we have the choice to pay 12 months or for a little more than half the cost we can opt for 6 month payment Road Tax Disk. Many who struggle with finances can only afford the 6 month disk. They make money from those poor and unable to pay the 12 month charge up front. Two 6 month Disks therefore costs more than one 12 month charge.

You can get a 1 year or for 2X the amount get a 2 year tag when you renew, only!

Weighing up the option of using a hire car for Snowbirding through the winter months. British visitors can use their UK Driving Licence if not staying over three months. So plan to Snowbird three months then return home for couple of weeks or pop over to Bermuda (UK Island) for a weekend, then return to our Florida home for another three months. Then return to the UK for our spring/summer. Let the car hire company worry about servicing and maintenance and Road Tax License.
