The only place I would imagine they'd be put up would be in and around the JTB and southside area.

But, again, why would anyone? Skyscrapers are a legacy of a bygone era before the Internet and the ability for you to work from just about anywhere.

They're ridiculously expensive to build and maintain. They're just not needed unless space is limited, which it's not around here.

I don't agree that they are a legacy of a bygone era at all. If you go to China for example you'll find that they have hundreds of cities with thousands of skyscrapers in each city. Nearly all of which were constructed within the last decade. Shanghai alone has more than 5,000 skyscrapers and they keep building more. It actually seems backward in this day and age for us to avoid building them.

Let's please not compare Shanghai to Jacksonville...

Our American dollars spent at Wal Mart more or less built every one of those things.

Those dollars our banks create out of thin air?

Seriously though, if the Chinese can create things and work hard to modernize their cities. We should be able to as well. All it takes is hard work and a vision for the future... That is something Jacksonville desperately needs. It needs a vision, one which doesn't come from backroom deals and a good old boy network which gives us 350 million dollar courthouses.

Those cities are tacky, dirty, ugly, cramped and congested looking, especially in the third picture. I hope to God Jacksonville doesn't get that way. I'd hate for everyone to have to live in a cramped high-rise apartment with no yard or open space.

Living in a high rise apartment in a big city is FUN. You actually feel like you have more space to live. I'm in a house with a yard when I am here in Jacksonville and it feels like a prison. It is not as fun or as liberating as when I was in San Francisco in a high rise. I'd take an elevator down and walk outside and be surrounded by fun healthy and interesting things to do. I'd walk 10-20 miles a day and visit all kinds of parks and stores and points of interest. You don't tend to do that when you are in the burbs.

Shanghai has 23,000,000 people, Jacksonville has 925,000. Shanghai province is 4 times as large as Jacksonville. You get 22 million of your friends to move to Jacksonville and I assure you there will be more skyscrapers here than there are there. Until that happens, it ain't gonna happen in Jax.
