You will probably save up a lot more living in Jax. You'll revel in the fact that there are NO state income taxes (take THAT Cuomo)! Also, you have no city taxes like in NYC. Property & school taxes (if you decide to buy) are WAY cheaper, unlike NY State where they are practically a second mortgage. No bottle deposits - just toss 'em in the recycling bin. The people in Jax are generally very nice, and you'll find it to be a melting pot of people from all over who relocated as well as native-born Jacksonville-ians. It's NOT NYC, so may be a bit of culture shock, but that is part of the charm. However, you may have to buy a new wardrobe consisting solely of shorts & flip-flops: it is hotter than balls...

Make sure that job lead is secure when you land in Jax, because this is an "M&M" city. (Military & Medical). Although Web.Com & LPS have been hiring a lot of techies recently. Jax is predominantly a "family-oriented" city, but there are few places for singles to hang out like the St. Johns Towncenter, Riverside, San Marco, Springfield, & the beaches. For me personally, this all gets old too quick & I prefer a cooler/non-humid climate & I had to move out at 18. It also helps that where I live now has public transit, more local shops, culture, mountains, & a more liberal vibe...etc. But Jax is cool...for Northeast Florida's standards.

Hey, if you're interested I can connect you with a very good opportunity in Jax...a development firm in financial services looking for people like you. Then again, that may be the lead you are already looking at, lol.

As for moving here, i think you'll be fine especially for just a few years. It's a nice change of pace. And obviously very few places in the country can compare to NYC. Really it's one-of-a-kind in the whole world.

Having no state income taxes is nice, but there are still alot of broke people running around down here. Gotta still be smart with that money you don't send to the gov't.

The original poster may be looking for an area that is more conservative. Being young does not necessarily equate with being liberal. And the OP may want a hot humid climate. We have that in Jax. I love the humidity. My wife thinks I'm crazy.

I knew a girl from NYC back in college... did not get Drivers Licence til she was 21. She liked the freedom of not being beholden to transit schedules and routes. I would love to have the option to take a train or bus to work, get to read, relax on the way to work. But its good to have a car if you want to go somewhere after work etc. She loved the vibe of Jax, much less stressful than NYC. I grew up in NJ so New York City is familiar to be... I think its exciting and fun but would not want to live there but great to visit

Any state without a state income tax is a good move for a single person. Never been to NYC, but Minnesota is the Welfare state--and the state of 10,000 taxes. Florida is lovely and cost of living (for singles) great. No state income taxes in Florida-welfare maidens are on their own. Its a good move.
