What are some good area credit unions in JAX? 1 of my 2 current banks does not have locations down there, and I always like the feel of having a relationship with a local credit union.

Vystar, Community First or Jax Federal Credit unions are probably the best three (3) I deal with. But there are a couple of other credit unions that are available depending on where you live or where you work or what your profession/job is.

GadgetRick - you have to have a military affiliation to be with NFCU right?

Seems like Vystar is by far the most popular, good to know.

Sort of. I was in the Navy but didn't retire. When I tried to open an account they told me I couldn't because I didn't have an ID. I said, "I was in the NAVY and you're the NAVY Federal Credit Union!" They agreed it was a stupid policy but said I couldn't do anything about it.

Then they asked if a family member was in the military at any time. My father was also in the Navy but has been dead for many years. I mentioned that. They told me that was good enough. All they did was ask for his name but didn't check anything to verify he had been in the Navy or that he was my father or that he even existed (ever)!

So I say, "sort of," because it seems to me it would be very easy to get an account if you wanted to get one.

Honestly, I have absolutely NO complaints about them. Friendly staff (I go to the one in AB) and love the lack of fees.

Regarding Vystar, they had a little problem last year where some tellers at some locations (don't know which ones) were stealing personal information from customers and selling it. From what I remember, it wasn't totally isolated--i.e. it was more than one location--which makes me wonder about their commitment to protecting personal information. Of course, this could happen anywhere so take what you will out of it all.

But I've never heard any of my friends say anything bad about Vystar.

Great insight everyone, I really appreciate it.

Does USAA have any physical branches down there? I know in many areas where military bases are present they have actual walk in locations.
