Hi everyone! I'll be moving to Jacksonville this summer and I really could use some insight on where I should move to. I'm in the Navy, so I'll be working at NAS Jacksonville. I currently live in the northern Chicago suburbs. Before I moved here, I made the mistake of not doing much research on the different areas to live and I made my decision based on the cost... big mistake.

I'm single, 24, and I'm trying to live in a location where there is a good bar scene/night life and a large population of young people within my age group. I've been told Jacksonville Beach area is my best shot, but I'm not sure if I want to make the 15-20 commute to NAS, on top of crossing the Buckman bridge (which I hear can be quite a headache during rush-hour traffic). Is the buckman bridge as bad as I hear? Some other posts have been pointing me to the Avondale/Riverside area.

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Depends on your commute hours, but driving from the beaches to NAS Jax could be a huge headache. Riverside/Avondale would be much more convenient and is a nice option as well. They both have a good night life...Riverside is pretty hipster/indie/artsy although that's prevalent as it grows in popularity. The beaches has a decidedly college-feel but plenty of people of all stripes.

FWIW, my choice would be Riverside.

Riverside for the easier commute daily. Travel to the beaches as needed. Riverside is probably the best overall neighborhood in Jacksonville to call home anyway IMO.

15-20 minute commute, only if you drive a Delorean Time Machine! From the middle of Jax Beach to NAS is about 33 miles and takes at least 40 minutes on a good day,
at rush hour figure on at least 60 minutes and that's without any traffic accidents. And yes the Buckman bridge sux at rush hour along with the JTB/I-95 intersection.

Go with the Riverside area, it's even more dynamic than Avondale or the Jax Beaches

I am moving sooner than you(later this month), and while I am older than you (early 30s) I chose to be closer to my job(St Johns Town Center Area) and venture to the nightlife or beaches when I want to, which would be maybe 1 to 2 weekends a month.

The Buckman bridge does suck at rush hour, but you'll be going the opposite way of the majority of traffic if you're commuting from Jax Beach. I still wouldn't do that if I were you though, pretty far of a commute given your choices. Riverside is probably your best bet.

What's your budget?

Yeah, what are you looking to spend anyway?

He's in the Navy, so he should be able to afford a place in Riverside I would imagine. Here's a place I would definitely check out if I were him and he were here. However, neither of which are true, but here it is anyways:

Fab Five Points Cozy One Bedroom. Call today!

The place is 2 blocks from 5 Points, has on site laundry and is pet friendly for gosh sakes.

Thank you everyone for the responses. To answer a lot of your questions, my budget for rent is $1,200 give or take. After browsing online for rentals, it looks like I should be able to find a pretty nice 1 Bed / 1 Bath for my budget. The more I read everyone's posts, Riverside is looking like the way I'm leaning.

If I end up moving to Riverside, will traffic to and from NAS even be that bad? Of course I don't know, but I assume that it wouldn't be too crazy since I'll be headed away from downtown on my way to work. Any ideas on the average commute time I'll be looking at?
