No big surprise here. I'm sure I'll long for Saint Augustine 40 years from now.

There are some fabulous pictures on the Facebook page titled St. Augustine, FL . If you belong to Facebook, type St. Augustine, FL in the search box to access the info. and pictures. If you "Like" the page you will receive daily postings of updated pictures and events. I moved to St. Augustine when I retired 15 years ago and I still wake up every morning feeling extremely blessed to live here.

While downtown and the beach areas seem nice, I drove through some seriously ghetto parts of St. Augustine no more than 3 miles west of the city that I would not want to retire anywhere near...

never "judge the book by its cover" It is not a "ghetto" just a poorer part of town
Suggest you relocate in Palm Coast as your attitude will not sit well in St Augutine

I call it like I see it. People who live in St. Augustine aren't allowed to have opinions because I would say my comment was a lot more opinion and very little attitude.

The area Saint Cabbage is referring to is West Augustine. Historically, a ghetto would be a neighborhood to put groups such as immigrants or those of a minority race, who weren't allowed to live anywhere else. Nowadays the reasons for these areas are economical and cultural; people can't afford to live wherever they like, and choose to live among others with similar background. Some people do commonly use the word ghetto interchangeably with the word slum. A slum is characterized by its run-down status, while a ghetto is characterized by the people who live there. West Augustine is definitely not a slum, but it is in fact a ghetto when the word is used properly. I don't know why Saint Cabbage doesn't want to retire anywhere near people who are of a different race and economic status, but I think diversity is a good thing and so do the majority of us who live in St. Augustine. I happen to have many friends who live in West Augustine. Most would like to live in a more upscale neighborhood, but cannot afford to do so. I live 6 miles from West Augustine and visit in the West Augustine area several times each week.
