Hi,
Is it safe to drop-off middle school-aged girls to shop and hang out with friends at St Johns Town Center? It seems like a great place for my kids to go with friends to shop and eat out, but I'm worried after hearing that a child was abducted from a Walmart in JAX in the middle of an afternoon a few weeks ago. I'm wondering if responsible parents drop off tweens at malls, movies, beaches, sporting events in JAX?
Thanks your honest opinion.

The "problem" with Town Center is that it's open air (as opposed to the Avenues Mall) and everything is pretty spread out. There is a main section with a lot of stores, so I suppose you could restrict where they could go.

My girls are still too young to be dropped off, but I would probably allow a responsible 13 or 14 year old with friends to walk around alone at Town Center and go to the movies. Not the beach though - but that's just me.

(As for the girl who was taken from Walmart...it wasn't in the middle of the afternoon - it was late at night (I believe the police were called after 11pm). Also, she was handed over to this sick pervert by her own mother. Of course it still does happen when kids are taken in broad daylight right off the street, but this wasn't one of those cases)

Thanks, hlauburn. I have to check out the Ave Mall when we move down there. Ok on the beaches. I will probably be cautious about dropping my kids (a tween and a teen) until I get a good sense about places in JAX. Also, thanks for clearing up about the news; did not know that.

This wasn't your point, but just to clarify....

The only 2 malls with an adjoining movie theater around Jax are Regency Mall and Orange Park Mall.

Neither the Avenues or the St. Johns Towncenters has theaters within walking distance of them.

Actually it just depends on how far you're willing to walk, from The St Johns Town Center to Cinemark Tinsletown USA theater is right at 1.5 miles. And from the Avenues Mall to Regal the Avenues 20 Theater is just about 1 mile.

Yes. Crossing virtual highways and areas that are not designed for pedestrains. Hence, you see no walking from one to another. All car driven. Those are very autocentric areas of town.

What virtual highways? You cross two signaled on/off ramps and you actually go under the I-95 overpass, and since when aren't easements walkable? Just because you city slickers must have/demand sidewalks doesn't mean a grassy shoulder can't be walked on. And there are sidewalks and no highways, all the way from the St Johns Town Center to Cinemark Tinsletown USA theater.

So just suck it up and admit you're wrong once again.

In theory, you COULD walk from both mall areas to the movies, but I would let anyone I love walk from Avenues to Regal! Sidewalks or not, you have to pass an interstate exit and walk down the side of a busy highway. TC to Tinseltown might be a little less risky, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, much less a "tween" or teen!

As long as they don't have access to your bank account, I would say it's safe enough.
