My girlfriend intends to move out of her current apartment when the lease runs out(final month there is March 2014).

Would she put her notice to leave when she pays her January 1st rent, or her February 1st? She is worried and doesnt want to put it in too late.

Also, would she be too early to start looking in January, even though she has to still pay Feb and March?

Thanks in advance!

Every apartment I have ever rented required at least one months notice of intent to vacate premises.
So if my lease expired on March 31, 2014 I would notify the leasing office when I made my March 1st
rental payment.

I would give 60 days and start looking when ever but most would not sign more then a month or 45 days out but you can get an idea of the places she would want to live earlier.

The lease should say how much advance notice is required. The most notice that can be required in a 1 year lease is 60 days.

Thanks guys. She took a look at the lease this weekend, and it did say 60 days. She saw a place she was interested in renting from a private owner on craigslist, but they said they couldnt hold the place longer than 30 days unless she wanted to pay rent in two places.
