My girlfriend and I are trying to plan a little vacation this summer. We know we don't want to go too far south in Florida so we've decided not to go any farther below Daytona beach than we have to but we don't really want to be too far north of Jacksonville either. We would really appreciate any tips or advice on what a good clean beach to visit would be.

Visiting from where? What are you looking for?

Amelia Island/Fernandina Beach is a pretty awesome and secluded getaway. St Augustine is quite touristy but still nice and you'd get to spend time in Downtown St Augustine too. Jax has decent beaches for relaxing, definitely not as glamorous a scene as south Florida, but much cheaper and laid back. I'm not much of a fan of Daytona Beach...

Thanks. We're coming from Tennessee. We had thought about going to Clearwater or somewhere in that area.

I guess it depends on exactly what you're looking for, but I looked around a little with Google's help and found that Forbes.com lists St. George Island State Park, southwest of Tallahassee, as the #3 best beach in America.

America's Top 10 Beaches Of 2013 - Forbes

Also, travelchannel.com lists Florida's best beaches as follows:

Delray Beach
Clearwater Beach
Naples
Sanibel Beach
South Beach
Siesta Key
Atlantic Beach
Key West
Palm Beach
Captiva Island

Top 10 Beaches in Florida : Travel Channel

With 3 of the 10 in the same area (Clearwater Beach, Siesta Key and Captiva Island), I'd say that would be a good way to go as well. Good luck and by all means, have fun!

Amelia Island is great if you want closer to TN.

If you want further south (Gulf Side - Tampa and south)
-------------------------------------------------------------
Clearwater - nice, but typical wide beach with lots of action/hotels/restaurants (parts feel like a city beach - lots to do around there)
St. Petersburg - nice more of a city beach - lots of accomodations
**Sanibel / Captiva - beautiful, lots of shells/white sand. Sanibel has plenty of reasonable accomodations
**Siesta Key - voted #1 beach for its fine white sand - lots of cute little motels - near St. Armand Circle - wonderful shopping and restaurants
Naples - upscale
Sarasota - probably upscale
* Marco Island - upscale -several nice name hotels
* Longboat Key - upscale. Nice Hilton there. quiet, but near St. Armand Circle

Day trips - (gulf / tampa area, near Clearwater - can eat in Dunedin - cute town)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Caldesi Island / Honeymoon Island State Park (take the boat to Caldesi from Honeymoon) - beautiful beaches - google image it
Ft Desoto State Park

* = recommend
