Get rid of them first or pay extra not to have them. They were popular in the 70's - but are now basically a hallmark of cheap construction by builders who can't be bothered to do nice ceilings. Robyn

They are knockdown ceilings... Which I'm not happy about but will have to live with. I'm from New England and they aren't very common up there so I'm not used to them.

I'm more worried about paint quality on the walls than on the ceiling. Although I'm sure we will have to do the ceiling eventually. I want to be able to keeps walls/scuffs away and magic erasers can practically wipe off that builder grade paint. Plus it's also about the color which the builder didn't really offer.

I'll look into renting scaffolding. I think the ceilings are 10' at the highest, although I'm not positive. We aren't in town at the moment and the house isn't done yet.

I've done quite a bit of painting before but it's been a couple years so these tips are very helpful and much appreciated!

I'm not a big fan of textured ceilings either, but builders love them. I'm okay with knockdown. I can live with popcorn if I'm renting, but wouldn't have it in a house that I own.

ETA: I do like the plaster ceilings in older homes, but there are very few people out there who can do a true plaster ceiling anymore, and they don't usually work for builders.

Also, for any future readers who do have popcorn ceilings and either want to keep them or can't get rid of them for cost reasons or because they are renting: When painting a wall with popcorn ceilings above it, take a painter's 5 in 1 tool and hold it with the blade against the wall at about a 20 degree angle and the squared edge against the ceiling. Pull it horizontally along the wall and it will take about 1/4 inch of the popcorn off at the wall joint. A bit tricky to get the hang of right at first, but it will save quite a bit of time over trying to follow the texture. This trick doesn't work with knockdown, but knockdown is much more uniform so it isn't really necessary.

I agree with you, popcorn is the worst! Knockdown is tolerable.

As much as I'd love to have flat ceilings, it wasn't offered by the builder. We don't have time to scrape them down and redo and repaint them because, well, we need a place to live!

I'll have to tolerate them for now and maybe will be able to change them in the future.
