Hi there everyone. I am looking to relocate to Jacksonville, FL for a fresh start personally and professionally. I'm doing comparison research between here and TN. I've never been outside of Chicago, IL before, but it's time for a change so I'm doing a lot of research before I take the leap. I am a single, middle aged African American woman, who is creative, eclectic and industrious but quiet and laid back too. I have a professional background in IT, office management, marketing and communications. I want to live in a truly diverse community that is safe, neighborly (as can be in America), some place that is seriously affordable and is close to employment and public transportation (until I get a car!) and has a big city/down home feel. I'm looking for an environment where people are business minded, even as employees, because that's what I am, too. Please suggest best neighborhoods. Thanks.

Creative, ecletic, diverse, neighborly, affordable, close to public transportation, entrepreneurial........

You're describing Riverside (half of the Riverside & Avondale historic dsitrict) and the Springfield historic district. Pretty much to a tee.

I'd give the edge to Riverside for the creative & entrepreneurial labels, and Springfield historic district for the neighborly and affordable able label.

One other option may be Murray Hill, but it lacks in your criteria compared to the other two options.

Here's some info on these neighborhoods:

Good access to public transportation is the big issue if you have no car at the moment.

Riverside is a great place.

Towncenter has an integrated living/shopping design. Downtown may be an option as well, depending on your workplace, lots of public transportation, access to restaurants, the riverfront, lots of activities.

I'd say consider the workplace first, (if it will be a permanent job) then how to best get there, rent for a while where you can easily access your job, and spend time geting familiar with the area, then make the choice that suits you best.

Considering your self-description - I'd look not only at JAX - but at other places in the south too. Especially Atlanta. Although if you look at Atlanta today - the weather might scare you away! Robyn
