So Im looking to invest in a house for some secondary income. I see some houses west of Avondale in my price range that are in the murray hill area. Is this a safe location? I dont spend a lot of time in that area since I live out near the beaches.

Depends on where in the neighborhood you happen to be.
Here's a map:
Generally speaking, the area East of Edgewood Avenue is still somewhat sketchy. I personally wouldn't live there.
The "heart" of Murray Hill, per se, is West of Edgewood Ave, East of Cassat Ave, and North of Plymouth Street. That area of the neighborhood is just fine, and trending upward.

I concur with fsu813 on this one. I have friends that live in the "heart" of Murray Hill, and it's a rather nice neighborhood. On the other hand, when I was running my handyman business I did some work on the outskirts of Murray Hill and, while it wasn't necessarily a place that I wouldn't go after dark, it was definitely not an area that I would prefer to live in.
