My husband and I will be moving to Jax in August to be closer to my family who live there. I was wondering how difficult is it to find a job? I work from home so my job moves with me but my husband is giving up his job here that he has been at for the last 18 years. He currently works in supply distribution for a large hospital here. He is not in managment or anything like that, he delivers supplies to the various facilities owned by the hospital. He has worked in the warehouse in receiving and distribution. I was hoping he will find a Job somewhat like he has at this time.

We are also looking at renting for a year before buying. We are moving from North Dakota and looking forward to it after our 9 months of winter. Here it is May and we are just making it into the 50's. Also you can get much more house for the money in Jax than here.

I did recently spend time from the end of November to February there and absolutely loved your winters. The crime has me a little worried but there is crime everywhere. Well I guess I am just babbling now so I will get back to why I wrote this......

Is it difficult to find employment and are the wages as low as what I have seen on the job boards? Ten dollars an hour is pretty low IMHO.

North and South Dakota must be the greatest places on Earth as every Best Places to Do Whatever Lists have them at the top. I don't understand how a house there would cost so much, but maybe because it's so super awesome, everyone wants to live there??

In general, if your skill set doesn't match open positions near where you live, than yes, it's hard to find a job. Plenty of hospital-type jobs here, so I would imagine it wouldn't be too difficult. I don't know the context of your $10/hr remark, so hard to comment on that. If your husband isn't making decent cash after 18 years at the same company, there's something up there.

As you said there's crime in every city in America, I wouldn't let that sway you in the least, research the areas where you're going to live and don't move near the high crime areas.

What's your budget for a home?

The Bakken Formation (oil/gas field) there has created a massive market for high paying jobs that don't require extensive skills. People would move up there and make six figures with a high school education. Houses couldn't be built fast enough so prices shot up accordingly.

We are not looking to buy a home at this time and our budget all depends on what type of employment my husband secures. I am an RN and I work from home reviewing medical claims. I make a decent wage but not enough to purchase the kind of home we would like on my wages alone.

My comment about the 10hr job was due to some of the warehouse jobs I have seen advertised have a wage of 10-10.50hr which seems low as far as pay goes.

I do not know much about living areas in Jax. I do have family there but they live on the westside in areas I prefer not to live in. I am not saying they are bad areas just not my cup of tea. I did like the Argyle Forrest area and of course the St.Johns town center area. At least I think that is what it is called with the big outdoor shopping center. However not sure I can afford living there. I am looking at spending about 1100.00 mo for rent.

Haha to you remark about SD and ND. I can't say everyone wants to live here, I think most are born and raised here and just never venture out of their comfort zone. Housing is very expensive here. What would cost us at least 250,000 here would only cost around 170-180,000 there from what I have seen on Realtor.com.
