My husband and I will be moving to Jacksonville in a couple of months. My mom lives there and is getting older so we are moving so I can be closer to her and be there when she needs me.

I have to admit I read the Jax news all the time and the murder there is outrageous. So I was wondering how safe do you feel living there?

We are giving up a lot to move to jacksonville and I hope it is not a mistake. Will we have to be looking over our shoulder every where we go?

You do realize that the newspapers job is to sensationalize all the bad things happening in town to create a larger reader base.
Remember the news directors favorite saying, ''If it bleeds it leads"

It will only be a mistake if you come down here with a mistaken attitude, expecting everything to be perfect.
Or even worse just like it was where you moved here from.

Only if you're paranoid or really stupid and act like a fool in the wrong parts of town.

I personally feel very safe in Jacksonville, but then I don't frequent the bad parts of town while acting like a fool.

The vast majority of shootings in Jax are reklated to drug activity.

Don't do, buy, sell or hang out with drug dealers and you'll be fine : )

Generally speaking, most (obviously not all) of that activity is located North of I-10 and West of I-95, aka the Northwest quadrant of Jax......that said, there's plenty of nice areas in that large swath of the city, and there's rotten pockets in other parts of the city too.

I have to say your post made me chuckle whether you meant it to or not

It is good to hear that those of you who replied feel safe. I haven't lived in a big city for 20 years and I am looking forward to it

Jacksonville while it is the largest city area wise in the continental US is by no means a big city. If anything it's a fair sized middling city, with delusions of grandeur. And while I intended to give you a chuckle I feel thateverything I've said above is true.

Big is a relative term. Whether something is big or small just depends on what you compare it to. Jacksonville's population is big compared to most cities in the U.S. and small compared with other larger cities like Miami or Atlanta.

Oh, ...and no, we don't feel very safe here in general. Our house got broken into in December and we live in the Southside, not the northwest quadrant. Also, we have the highest murder rate in the state every year. Not that we're in constant fear for our lives, but you do have to be aware of your surroundings.
