How is the job market in Jacksonville? What are commute times and traffic like around 7-9am or 4-6pm?

Are there many IT jobs? I currently work in IT and I am curious. Are there many medium to large companies and are most downtown?

I am just trying to get some general info.

Getting an IT contracting gig in Jax if you have some experience...3 years + (Developer, QA, Project Manager, Bus. Analyst, etc) is pretty easy right now if you get some recruiters working for you, however the market for full time positions at these companies is still pretty tight. Alot of the big boys in the area (BOA, Chase, Citi, Everbank, Florida Blue, LPS) are going the contractor route more often so they can drop you like a bad habit if a project goes under. But you can negotiate a pretty decent hourly rate depending on your skills as a trade off for no job security.

I don't consider these contracting positions as "jobs". Its more like "work", which is the preferred business model of the future.

If you live at The Strand you can walk two blocks to Stein Mart headquarters. I've worked for a couple of IT people there - employees. And non IT people there, too.

Traditional commuting is dicey.
