Take a look at Cricket. It's owned by AT&T and uses their (GSM) network, which is very robust here and nationally. They have multiple stores in the Jax area. Just shifted to them and I am quite pleased with it. No contract, and the fees they cite include taxes and fees -- a rarity. $50 means $50, not $58.

I agree - I had Cricket while living in Denver and was mostly pleased with their service and their choices for phones. Customer service sucked but so does the customer service for Straight Talk. But at least with Cricket and Straight Talk if you try it out for a month and don't like it, there are no contracts so you can quit at any time and keep your phone.

Since there is competition between carriers who would love your business, maybe see if the big ones (AT&T or Verizon - and yes Sprint does stink in coverage, so I'd cross them off the list) might be willing to pay your termination fees. It wouldn't hurt to ask. Although not a cell service company, but as an example, Comcast has been known to extend new customer discounts when they expire if customers "threaten" to head off to satellite TV. While I'm thinking of that, if AT&T or Verizon offers TV service wherever you land, maybe you can up the ante by thinking about bundling services with one of them - maybe that would be an incentive for one of them to consider paying your termination fee.

You could try Simple Mobile. You can chose either an At&t or a T-mobile sim.

Thanks so much to all the posters for your tips. Really appreciate the help - and it's also reassuring to know that we can set up our phones without locking into a contract (up until recently there has been a couple of companies monopolizing the market here in Toronto so that's what I'm used to). I will explore all the recommended options when we arrive in November. Countdown is on!
