Hey guys,

I am moving from MA to FL. I was thinking of the area around Jacksonville. I will be going to University of Florida for my Graduate degree, so I was looking for a place that is somewhat close to Jacksonville, and about 45ish minutes to Gainesville. I will be going to Gainesville 1~2 times a week.

Any suggestions? I was looking into buying a house and needed some ideas. Thanks!

Truth be told it is going to take you more than 45 minutes to get their probably about an hour with traffic which leads me my first question as to why don't you want to live in Gainesville ?

You could live in Starke, FL. and be about 30-45 minutes from each, depending on traffic.

This has come up a few times on this forum over the years. If you have to commute to Gainesville more than twice a week then I would really strongly consider living there. If it's just twice a week then you could swing it from Jacksonville. I would NOT consider anywhere in between.

Orange Park, Fleming Island, Green Cove Springs, Lakeside, and Middleburg are the suburbs southwest of Jax that would put you closer to Gainesville (45-60 min)…but I would much rather live in cooler parts of Jax than in those suburbs.

Cool, but isn't there a maximum security prison in Starke?

Any suggestions on places within Jacksonville that are nice? I work from home by the way, in case it matters.

The usual suspects.

Urban Core neighborhoods: Riverside, Brooklyn, San Marco
Beaches: Jax Beach, Neptune Beach
New suburban but still fairly walkable: St Johns Town Center, Tapestry Park, Deerwood Lake.

Some people also like Avondale, Murray Hill, Springfield, or Downtown for Urban Core neighborhoods but for different reasons I don't find them as desirable.

Riverside is the closest at about 90 minutes to Gainesville…Beaches would be the farthest at 120 minutes.

If you like typical suburban living though then those places I mentioned before should be fine. Fleming Island is quite popular.

If you want to be relatively close to UF, but in the JAX metro area with amenities, I'd look at Eagle Harbor in Flemming Island. It's a master planned community with first class amenities. Main | Eagle Harbor Neighborhood in Fleming Island, FL

As Projectmaximus mentioned, Riverside is the closest to UF of the desirable JAX neighborhoods. Riverside is about 25 to 30 minutes further to UF than Eagle Harbor, but has an Urban Hip element with mostly older housing stock.

Avondale & Old Ortega are just south of Riverside and are beautiful, older established neighborhoods filled with mostly Florida natives, which gives these neighborhoods a genteel southern character.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ortega_(Jacksonville)
