Well looking back you do not seem to have made any stupid comments, so I guess I shouldn't have included in with the juveniles. It just appeared you were part of their self adulation group and got a kick out of the francis comment, thereby piling on.
However I now see you were not involved in the initial immaturity.

Unfortunately as you can see, the individuals who decided to punk someone(or whatever immature fools call it these days) have succeeded in driving off the OP. That is why I asked the question because this is such a specific section of the forum, you'd think they would be goofing around in the Off Topic section instead.

To the jerks, and you know who you are, I don't live in Florida, I asked a serious question, and by the way, I did look for other posts/threads, but didn't see anything current on Amelia Island specifically. I made a trip down there, I didn't see any snakes, but I was there for a short time. In doing research, I found on more than one website that there are rattlers and cotton mouths there, we have those here in Kentucky too, but nowhere near where I live. Get it?? Wildlife can vary widely within an area/state. I've got 2 dogs that right now when I let them out in our yard the worst I have to worry about is a garter snake, a stand off with an opossum, or sprayed by a skunk. I love my dogs and yeah, them being safe is important to me. If I knew the answer I wouldn't be on here asking because unlike you, I have more constructive ways to spend my time. You're accusing people of not having a sense of humor, guess what, this isn't a comedy club!! I'm sure there's places online where folks will enjoy your "unique" sense of humor, so why don't you leave this site to the people who want to ask and answer serious questions?? And with that, I'm done with this thread for good. Jody out!!
My initial reaction is that you are better off not dealing with people who are children or have the mentality of them despite their chronological age. Then again for me, I think boorish behavior warrants being called out, hence the reason I even engaged them to begin with. So don't leave your own thread before you are good and ready. You know who the individuals are now, so just ignore them and carry on. They will grow weary of not being fed, and will move on. If they don't, it is just further evidence of their immaturity.

Getting back to your topic, dachshunds are tough little dogs, and I suspect you know this from the reasons they were originally bred. So no worries about garter snakes and the like because they will be more afraid of your little guys than the other way around. Frankly the biggest concern most people have with little dogs in FL are gators and crocs, not snakes. Sure in S FL near the Everglades there are pythons and other constrictors that can pose a danger, but not up in Amelia Island. Only people who are irresponsible and release pet snakes into the wild will result in that type of a snake being in the area. Then again that can happen anywhere since we ship snakes to all parts of the country.
You never did say what area of AI you were going to move it?
I recommend the Plantation as it is something special. If you have even been to Hilton Head, you know what the Plantation is like, and I prefer it to HH. Plus the Plantation has private beaches where dogs are welcome, and they frolic with each other near the surf.

Some people on here do need a since of humor.

I was one of the unfortunate people that grew up on the island, and have seen a Diamondback, Pygmy, Coral, and a cotton-mouth. They are out there but tend to avoid the populated area's. I've heard we also have the Timber Rattler, just have not seen one. I've seen more gators around here than snakes, but I live on the marsh. We had a dog, that played out in the yard all the time, and the nothing bothered the dog at all.

Do you mind if I ask, Centauri, why do you say "unfortunate to grow up on the island"? It seems like it would be a lovely place to grow up, since it seems like the snakes, poisonous or not, seem to want to avoid people!! I grew up in the shadow of steel mills, a very gray, industrial place in the '60's. Amelia Island would have seemed like paradise to me.

That was a little joke I threw in there, but growing up here was not bad. Yulee was not too developed and the majority of the island was not too developed and as kids we got away with a lot of stuff. It took 10 min max to get to I-95, and you can actually go the speed limit on A1A and hit one of the two traffic lights on it. Now it seems that the A1A can't handle the current traffic that it has. (I do not think making it wider will help either.) Downtown Jacksonville (before it became Jack and Kill) was 30 min away. I knew all of the locals and we had our local hang out before it became all touristy. If I did not want to go into my current career, I might want to stay here, but I can make more money out west, and most of my friends are out there too. (Hopefully the family will follow suit.)

As for my dog, we had to put him down. He lived a good 14 years.

Jody, in the 60s and even the 70s, Amelia Island WAS a paradise.
