We are currently looking at two houses in St Johns JCP area with pools. Wondering if anyone could advise on the neccesity of screened in pool areas. We have lived in South Florida before where a screen made all the difference with the bugs. How is it in St Johns?

Expensive if you have to add enclosure later. The one with enclosure is more valuable for resale purposes.

If you have a house where you can open up the back doors all the time, you definitely want a screen to keep bugs and critters out. Screens are typically not going to keep everything out, but will definitely limit the number of them, especially if you are out there at night.

A downside to having a screened pool is that it will limit the amount of natural heating that would otherwise take place from direct sunlight exposure. Of course, if there's already a pool heater installed, then that's a non-issue. If you installed a screen enclosure later, it could cost around $10k. That's the figure we've been given during our pool install research at our own house. We have several old, large Live Oak trees in our backyard, so we will do the screening just for the purpose of keeping out all the leaves.

We're considering putting in a pool, and screen enclosure is the one thing we both agree is a deal-breaker. If screening it puts us over budget, we wait a year or so to build the pool. Bugs are annoying, snakes are awful, and leaves will just increase the time we (and my we I don't mean me, lol) will need to spend cleaning.
