Having UF within easy driving distance and the availability of Florida's GREAT tuition program should probably be on that 10 things to know list.
I think you will want to stick with schools in the northeast. That is one thing no one will argue with, Florida is not a place to receive education....except about how to change a tire I guess.

As if people from the north are so caught up in Italian Food that somehow, someway they do not have the slightest idea how to change a tire or how to be nice. Come on give me a break.

There's an authentic Colombian/Mexican place out on beach near the Intercoastal in the Big Lots Center. Try the Arepa with egg or the empanada's for something original.

Empanada's: bite off the end, fill with lime (called Lemon) juice or with the hot sauce.

Arepas....haven't had those since Jersey.

Default Enough with Jersey...

I am moving to get AWAY from Jersey; I'll survive without "gabbagole" and "manigott", thank you. I'm not Italian, so I just don't care. I realized, in the last 10 years here in Jersey, I've only had 3 cheesesteaks and one package of Tastykakes, so it's clear, these are not important things to me. Apparently, they are to Jersey people, and this is why Corzine & McGreevey et al got away with robbing you all blind the last 20 years - because you're concerned about petty crap (like penne) and not what's really important (like pensions). It's been said before, it bears repeating - if you don't like it, GO BACK NORTH!
Please get off the south vs. north bit and help me find out what it's all about to live in Jacksonville. I want to be a good neighbor, fit in and acclimate, not bulldoze my way into new surroundings and demand everything be catered to my whims.
Thank you

you seem like you'll fit in fine here. accept the place for what it is, seek out the good things and have a good time. don't be put off by the naysayers. JAX is a great place to live, you can pick and choose the lifestyle you want from the beaches to the river, suburban or urban it's all here.

I find it funny that within the course of a thread you became sick of hearing about NJ.....and the only reason we made comparisons is because you were moving from Jersey to Jax. Usually we get this crap from "Jax is paradise because I don't want a big city" Jacksonville residents who anytime we try to better Jacksonville with a few interesting urban ideas that we learned from northeast living they jump on the "well if you want those amenities in a southern city fuhgetaboutit and move back to the north."

I find it shocking that you have taken up that tone before even setting foot in Jacksonville. This is a first. I am putting this in my list of CD Hall Of Fame Moments. Congratulations.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be rude; it's just that I have lived other places in the country, and knowing I can't get local foods in other states is no big surprise or deal. Any mature adult should not be shocked by it either, nor should they whine. Part of the reason I'm excited is I'm going on an adventure to someplace new to experience new things, somewhere I've never been before...
somewhere I mistakenly thought they have a football team named the "Panthers", when in fact (as my husband corrected me), they have a team named the "Jaguars"! (See yesterday's post)

I'll get the hang of it!

LOL ... I think this is one of the funniest posts I've read in a long time. You cracked me up with the "penne" and "pensions" thing. And what the heck is "gabbagole" and "manigott"?

But, seriously, you reminded me of a school trip to the Nile many years ago. Most of the kids, when we got off the tour bus, were absolutely enthralled by the sight of the pyramids. But then there were a few .... LOL... dying to find a MacDonalds. But I still think it's great that we all have different priorities.

Hope you make it to Jacksonville, you sound like someone who will adapt without much of a problem. Just remember to pack some Tastykakes.

wait
there are tastykake to be found
many of the Publix carry them and last week I saw a display at the Super Walmart on Atlantic & Kernan.

Also Philly Connection carries a nice selection

missing certain foods is not just a "jersey" or NY thing I have heard folks from all over the US that live here mention they have certain favorites that they miss.

cricket your nile story reminded me of the time we were on a cruise, 5 days of all the "fancy " not to mention endless supply of different foods. when we got off the ship in Grand Cayman I was very excited to see a Wendy's believe me I would of gone in but lol I was a little busy getting married
