We've been settling in here nicely since we moved here last summer. My cat Max has been loving the non-winter and hanging out on the screened lanai.

Unfortunatly, Max died suddenly at home on Monday. My son, 8 years old and having a hard time with this move, has been devastated as have I. Max had been with me for almost 14 years and was a total snugglebug.

Hubby and I have been talking about getting a new cat or kitten and we're interested in what experiences people have had with local shelters. All of our pets over the past 20 years have been shelter animals and we've had a variety of experiences.

We're not comfortable with the crapshoot that a stray from Craigslist could bring (Feline Leukemia, fleas) or having to submit to a crazy cat lady laundry list of qualifications (home visit, references from our 3 past vets). We've had experience with both types of adoptions. Neither was fun.

We fully expect to pay a rehoming fee. The cat will be indoors, no declawing, full vet care, and this is going to be a forever home.

Any shelters that stand out? Any that should be totally avoided?

I've always gotten pets from local shelters (not in Jax though)...they are quite the bargain w/ the adoption fee (under $100) including sterilization, initials shots, tatooing, and inital vet checkup w/ independent vet (they offered me a list of VCA's)

My current dog had a minor case of kennel cough (runny nose) that we noticed after a few days. I was able to take to the listed vet for free exam, I just had to pay the for the inexpensive meds.

My advice would be to try Jax humane society or the Duval county animal control...they have a website you can look at pets too.

You can check with rescues that use Petsmart and Petco.

The city of Jax has a listing:
Pets Online

Clay county has an animal shelter:

I am so sorry for your loss. I think any of the suggestions above will be good ones. There is no shortage of animals needing good homes. Good for you for "rescuing" them.

I second this. These animals are in serious need. This is a kill shelter because the amount of animals coming into it is huge. If I'm not mistaken, both Clay County and St. John's County Animal Control shelters are no-kill, so it's the animals in the Duval system that are in dire need.

I have 3 dogs, one of which is from Duval Animal Control, we adopted him 9 years ago. He is an incredible dog, one of the sweetest I've even had and he's my best watchdog of the 3. My other 2 never made it into Animal Control, I rescued them right off the street.

Here is the link to Duval's Animal Control, you can see the available cats on there (though they probably receive new ones each day). Good for you for adopting an animal in need!

Bless you for saving an animal!!!!! You will find there are MANY here in Jax who need homes. I would suggest
Jax Humane
SAFE Animal Shelter in Clay County
Animal Care and Control, b/c they are still a kill shelter.

Best of luck to you!!!!!! There are wonderful kitties out there. The Jax Animal Care and Control Adoption Center in Mandarin on San Jose has domestic SH, and LH, as well as many purebreed cats. My friend rescued a persian from there a couple months ago.

I have a cat for you, his name is Oreo, he is only 3 years old, he has been around my boys as a kitten. Unfortunaly my boys have all gone off to college, now, and my husband was laid off. We moved in with my sister, and the apartment complex just found out about him. Oreo either finds a new home or we all get evicted. Please help. He is such a cuddly loving cat that really needs a good home. He would be great for your son. If you want him please email me at myemail4u2@gmail.com. Thanks Jen
