My wife and I, both 33 with no children, will be relocating to Jacksonville from South Carolina in the fall and I need to know about Springfield. We want to by and restore a home in Springfield, just need to know if I'm completely crazy for entertaining the idea. We can't stand living in a cookie cutter planned subdivision, love old houses with character and it seems like Springfield fits the bill. With that being said, with the research I've done I'm only looking south of 8th between Pearl and Market. Does that sound good? should I expand my search area? Any and all help I could get would be helpful. Thank You.

You could expand one block more to the east to Liberty. My cousin lives there in an adorable bungalow.

I like Springfield, and I don't think you're "completely crazy" since it sounds like you've done your homework and are aware of all that Springfield is.

You didn't mention if your "homework" has been just online or if you've actually visited. I would strongly suggest the latter. (And when you do, please stop at Three Layers Café for a Jeff Square ... oh my oh my so yummy!)

Thank you. I have only researched online for now, we'll be doing a recon mission in a couple of weeks. I don't know what it is about the area but it seems to just be calling to us.

I think that you will like it - esp if you are into the turn of the century styles and details. I agree you can probably go east to Liberty - as this is the east boundary running parallel to Pearl. There are really nice houses that are restored and really old ones that could be beautiful with the right renovation.

You can easily expand your borders out perhaps even farther. It really depends on you and what your comfort level is. But there are rehabs occurring all along the periphery so there is some potential in every direction.

Good luck!!

A good friend of mine made this statement: "Springfield, you either get it, or you don't." It is not for everybody, that is for sure. But for the people that have made this their home, there isn't another place that could match it.

It sounds as if you are getting a little bit of that vibe, just from your online research. Your local visit could seal the deal.

The historic district boundaries are (aprox) Hogans Creek to the north, 12th St to the South, Boulevard to the west, and Clark St to the east.

The eastern edge gets a little sketchy. But I would still use these boundaries for your search as you may miss a great house or deal by limiting your self. Ionia and Walnut Streets both have some great places.

It is a neighborhood that has been coming back for a number of years. The housing stock is getting low so this is a good time to get in. The commercial district has been lagging behind but that is turning around with several new businesses opening now and in the near future.

Search Historic Springfield Community on Facebook. Pose this question there and I am sure you will get a lot of info.

And Yes, I live there, almost 7 years now.

Want to thank everyone for the info. Will be planning a trip down to Jax in the next couple of weeks. I am very excited to be apart of this revitalization.
