Is it true that Florida residents can attend college for free in your state? someone once told me this and I just wanted to know if there is any truth to the statement, if there is partial truth (like able to attend state colleges or community colleges)or if it is totally a false statement.

it is true that there are some programs like bright futures that will award scholarships to many high school students here in FLA. I don't know the criteria used. Tuition is quite low at the FLA schools like FSU or UF for residents, under 4k a year plus room and board

apvguy is correct that tuition is low for residents -- tuition at FCCJ (Florida Community College at Jacksonville) for a non resident runs about $4000+ per semester, but for a resident it's about $1000. Huge difference. However, the tricky part is the 12-month residency rule (must live here for a full year before one is considered a resident). Another benefit of FCCJ (and other community colleges) is that it's a "feeder" school to the 4-year FL universities - if a student follows a particular curriculum and passes, there's a guarantee to transfer for the junior year.

Thanks for the insight. I have two in highschool now and two in elementary. I know that eventually I will find my way down there and I'm not certain (depending on when it happens) if all of my kids will follow. However, I have been searching some real estate sites and I found some properties that are very economically priced in Jacksonville. Like between $25,000 - 50,000. The photos don't look too bad. Does this signify ****ty area, that they are infested with cockroaches, or are in need of TLC and may be a possible future home for someone? LOL I will share the streets and areas of the homes I am referring to and if you could provide personal insight it would be welcomed.

From the FSU website:
How much will it cost?

For tuition, room, board, and books, approximately $24,517 for out-of-state students; in-state $11,385. (Estimates based on undergraduate fees for the 2005-2006 year). More detailed information is available here (http://www.fsu.edu/students/prospective/undergraduate/finances/costs.html - broken link).

From the UF Website
Cost BreakdownsFlorida ResidentsNon-Florida Tuition and Fees* 3,37017,150 Books and Supplies 940 940 On campus Housing and Meals** 7,020 7,020 Off campus Housing and Meals*** 8,330 8,330 Computer Minimum**** 970 970 Local Transportation 520 520 General Expenses and Clothing 610 610 Optional Health Insurance 1,640 1,640 On Campus TOTAL $15,070$28,850 Off Campus TOTAL $16,380$30,160

I don't consider that free. It's true that there are a multitude of scholarship programs and funds available. That does not make Florida higher education tuition free.

Have a great day.

like I said in my original post tuition for both UF and FSU is a bit under 4k for fla residents
PLUS ROOM AND BOARD
I don't think any school will pay for room and board, clothing, health insurance, books compute and activiety fees
and like I said there is a program for FLA high school students that will let the students attend tuition free, but it is understood by most that program only covers tuition, they will need to pay the ancillary costs, thanks for digging out the additional info

The only people I know that can go to college completely for free in Florida are children who are in the State Foster Care system. Whether they age out of the system or if they are adopted by a family, every child who is a ward of the state will receive a free Florida college education...it's the least these kids deserve .

It is certainly not free--but if your kid is a halfway decent student, there is a lot of financial aid out there.
We are saving thousands of dollars on our FSU freshman son.
Bright Futures
Tuition may be raised in the future, or financial aid reduced. But right now we are doing really well and he is getting a good education.
