I am seriously considering a move to Jacksonville or the surrounding areas. I have five dogs - tiny ones who are almost 100% indoor dogs (they just need a fenced back yard). Does anyone know if there is a limit on the number of dogs one can have in a single family home? Can individual homes owners associations override this limit and set their own? My dogs are my children; if I can't move with them, I'll look elsewhere. thank you

HOA’s can have a stricter limit, so check any HOA docs beforehand. The city where we used to live had no pet limits—however, our HOA had a 2 pet limit so those were the rules.

That being said, each HOA has their own “culture” of enforcement depending on desire and board composition. For example, we had 4 pets at one time but nothing ever happened because no one took notice. I spoke to a board member who felt those pet rules were difficult to enforce because they really didn’t have authority to just go to someone’s house & demand to see how many pets they had.

But it’s better to be safe than sorry. I had a friend who bought a condo that had a weight limit on pets—they had to be small, no more than 25 lbs, I think. However, at the time, the board didn’t enforce the rule & he bought a 70lb dog. Eventually, the dog died & he was surprised to find that in the intervening years, new owners were on the board & were now enforcing the rules & he would not be able to get another large dog.

So beware...
