Looking for recommendations on places to fish with small children (5-8 yrs old) in May/June.

I am hoping for either a stocked pond or a kids only fishing hole where they are likely to atleast catch a bream or two. In Jacksonville is preferred, but I'm not opposed to driving a little ways elsewhere for a kid friendly spot. No boat, so we would need shore/dock fishing options.

If you have recommendations, lets hear them! Even if they don't meet all of the requirements above, please share. Thank you!

I've had a bit of luck at Hanna Park ($5 to get in) in the smaller ponds. I've never caught anything in the big one but you can see minnows jumping everywhere. I've also had a lot of good luck surf fishing there, especially if you get closer to the naval base (plaza 2-3). But I've had a lot of good luck lately surf fishing in Atlantic, Neptune and Jax Beach as well.

We've been in Jax for 8-9 months now and I'm still trying to find a few decent ponds, so far I've had isolated luck in random ponds...like you catch 1-2 fish one time and then nothing the next 10 times you try it.

So I'll be curious to see what others think. The advice that I've received is to go to places where I'm not supposed to go (private property) because usually no one fishes there. I'm still trying to figure out the Jax freshwater fishing scene. I'd like to be able to keep and eat what I catch as I do from the ocean but some of these small retention ponds look so dirty and have all the asphalt oil draining into them that I wouldn't. I wouldn't mind something stocked where you pay a bit to fish and know it's clean...I din't think you can find this around jax.

Reddie Point Preserve is located on the Saint Johns across from the mouth of Trout River, very close to the end of University Blvd N.

There is brackish water fishing along the shores and from the child friendly fishing pier. There is also a large pond as you enter the park where I've noticed folks fishing. That would be fresh water. I can't offer much advice on the freshwater scene but May and June will be good fishing in the river. The local bait shop is Arlington Bait and Tackle just let them know you're taking kids fishing and you'll get the local scoop.

The park is great but there's no shade on the pier so be ready for the heat.

Thank you both for your replies.

I will stop in the bait shop you mentioned ahead of time one day and see what they have to say. Maybe plan a trip after getting the scoop, thanks!

I'm not in Florida, but I'd call the local state fisheries down there and ask for suggestions of local places to bring your kids fishing. I've done this in the past when my kids were young and always got good recommendations from the people who stock local ponds. They can even give you insider's tips on each spot.
Good luck and your making memories that will be cherished.

Here's a place I used to take my son and daughter before they were big enough to go on off-shore fishing trips with me.

The Jax Beach pier was always fun for my kids. Whatever you do, don't forget the sunscreen!!
