I would really appreciate an insider's review of Oakleaf School (the one that is K-8) in Oakleaf Plantation. Having been a substitute teacher in over a dozen schools in Duval County, I know that schools can look great on the outside but have horrible discipline, etc. I would love to hear from any parents of Oakleaf students, especially concerning the lower elementary grades! Thank you!

Sorry...not much help here. I'm in Oakleaf. But, in a section that gets bussed to Argyle Elem. Can't wait for Oakleaf Village Elem to open next year. We are right down the street from it!

But, back to your question, I haven't heard anything negative.

My children attend Oakleaf school and they like it very much! I don't believe discipline is a problem. The principal is very hands on and is always around and available. There are also about 3 vice principals and academic counselors which all help keep such a large school in check. There is a high learning environment and parent involvement. My kindergartener is already reading at a 1ST grade level and my 8Th grader is very involved in all the school has to offer. Such as top notch AP classes and academic clubs, sports and arts. There is also lots of support for students who struggle. Such as tutoring, workshops and parent- teacher communication. We highly recommend Oakleaf School, it has a lot to offer and we've been very happy for the 2 years it's been open. The only negative might be the front office. They can be a bit clueless at times!! So calling the teacher directly is your BEST bet. Via telephone or email. Never had a problem with that!

We are VERY happy with the Oakleaf school. My child is in the thrid grade and is in a trailer. But these are very nice trailers, air conditioned, bathrooms, all modern IT equipment. We are very pleased with his teachers. I went to Catholic schools as a kid in Orlando and we had no A/C and the rooms were not nerly half as nice!!

Are AP classes offered to middle school students? I thought only high school students were offered AP classes.

Well I guess they're not "AP" but they were advanced classes. And I know for sure his math class was "honors Algebra" which had HS credit. Plus they also offer Honor's Geometry. Mr. Tillo is a terrific math teacher.

I don't mean to be argumentative, but I don't want false information out "there". If a student takes algebra in the 8th grade, it will not count as credit for the high school.

Not sure if they changed it since I was in school (way back in the day), but when I took Algebra in jr. high it did add high school credit to my transcript. Again, not sure if they changed it, as this was...*counts* 12 years ago in Clay County. However, 8th grade AP is likely incorrect, as the earliest I've heard of taking AP classes is 9th grade, and then it's usually through the IB program.

I am not a resident of the Oak Leaf Community, but can I still send my child to Oak Leaf School? I live off Chaffee Road which would be Duval County.

I don't mean to argue either, but my son who is an IB freshman at Ridgeview HS took Honors Algebra at Oakleaf and he will have HS credit for it.
