What’s Up With Jax Beach? (St. Augustine: school, live, shops)

Finishing up a long weekend in Jax Beach. Just seemed there were not as many people around on the streets and beach as one might expect. Is August not a usual time for tourists to visit? Does Jax Beach get many snowbirds? Figuring winters are cooler than further south, when do most tourists visit?
As an aside, the drive along A1A down to and around the Saint Augustine area was beautiful.

Jax Beach might not get snowbirds, but they certainly get their shootings. Cop was ambushed last week, and there was a shooting with a fatality either last month or in June.

In a nutshell, the town is a dump

Or, hey, how about it's the beginning of the school year for many people which accounts for the major reduction in tourists.

well that was an extreme take. Jax Beach is still very nice. Perhaps it was a little unusual when you were there.

From a tourism standpoint it is not the draw of areas farther north (Amelia Island) or south (PVB and St Augustine). But certainly it normally is quite busy with folks from around the region. However busy season is over...the city already reduced its lifeguard numbers to the off-season schedule, kids are back in school, etc. You should see Jax Beach during its big events in the Spring and early Summer.

Springing the Blues is in April, Dancing in the Streets is May, and so forth.

Thur - Sun is busier with the bar hops, dining, live music etc...Residents appreciate the quieter days towards fall and winter. I know I did as a kid in St Aug.

Neptune beach is nicer than Jax Beach (the beach up on Atlantic Ave). Well, the beach itself looks the same but the surroundings are much nicer than in Jax beach, not as many people, though, it is usually emptier than Jax beach.

Thanks for the recommendation. Without the usual activity in Jax Beach, it seemed big and empty. It wasn’t even mid August, so never expected it would be the end of the season. We stopped at a liquor store and was sold expired beer. Most of the shelves were empty. Not many people in the shops near the pier and those that were there definitely were not vacationers. Felt a bit unsafe.
On the positive side with the beach being less crowded, we definitely enjoyed it.

At the least, only a few shark attacks in the region. With the way the beaches in Florida have been doing, no red tide or seaweed is good enough for me!

St Augustine beach and points south are more my cup of tea. Beach town with a historic zone just a 10 minutes drive .

We were nearby in July, it was sorta slow for us as well. Just more room for us!

I really loved the ride down A1A to St. Augustine. Made up for the expired beer at Jax Beach! But seriously, any beach is good as long as you can get in the water or at least near it.
