We are planning to move from Massachusetts to Saint Johns, FL next year. We have some family there and the pay is twice as high for half the cost of living. I am a little concerned because I am unfamiliar with the area because my children are of Caucasian and south Asian heritage and my husband is Muslim. There are many families like ours here in Massachusetts. I know Jacksonville has a large Syrian population and a small Indian community, which makes me happy. Is Saint Johns a place where people would be accepting of our family?

I am very excited about the great weather, access to beaches and beautiful homes, however .

St Johns Co has a very large Indian community (Indian as in from India, not native American Indian).

Thank you. I knew that Southside (?) and Baymeadows had a ton of halal and Indian restaurants, which is always a good indicator of community representation. I am very interested in Fruit Cove/Creekside High school and was wondering if that community was represented at all there. I think there’s a 5% Asian population in the school, which is not too small.

I don't have specific numbers but I can say confidently that more and more Indians are moving into that particular area. My child's classes typically have several Indian children classmates at Patriot Oaks Academy. I see far more Indian families than I do Asian families, but I don't think any race would feel out of place in any part of St Johns Co. We have white, black, Asian, Indian, Hispanic neighbors all around us and everyone seems to get along, although it is pretty rare that I see Indian families interacting with non-Indian folks. They seem to always isolate themselves and only have other Indian friends. Just my take.

Thank you. That’s nice to hear. I am also very interested in Patriot Oaks but I’m a bit confused about re-zoning and when that would occur. It also happens but to a lesser extent here that people socialize within their own community. We socialize in the general community but are always happy to see people who look like my husbands family around our children. It’s also nice to have the community for holidays and restaurants.

You can't insulate yourselves from re-zoning but you can up the odds you won't get re-zoned by living as close to one of the schools as possible. We are so close that it wouldn't make sense on any level to send us to another school. But there was a proposal for homes just around the corner from us (0.3 miles) a while back to get re-zoned to another K-8 school, so it's still possible. FYI - families got together and protested and they decided to re-zone everything in another way.

I’m glad to hear here is an active and effective community to address local concerns such as this. It seems like it is inevitable with all the development happening in the area.

My son attended a camp put on by the Creekside High School Engineering Club recently and I observed many Indian and Asian students in attendance, both campers and high school volunteers. Of the aprox 30+ campers and a dozen high school volunteers it was a noticeably diverse group with multiple races represented.

While we were getting gas at Shell last Saturday AM, on Baymeadows next to the I-95, there was some kind of Indian (as in India) celebration/short parade going down Baymeadows (westbound)street with a law enforcement (JSO) escorting it. Beautiful India attire and one of them on a microphone speaking in Indian.

There are folks from India that live in our complex and they are very nice, as well as some blacks that are equally as nice. I seriously doubt you'd have a problem living here.
