We go there at least twice a week or more and have once seen a panhandler. A woman was asking for money but that was the only occurance out of at least 100 times. We really like SJTC. It has a nice mixture of stores and restaurants.

OP here...I'm at Town Center everyday as I live about 3 miles away and work from home, so I go to lunch there everyday. There are beggars at the stoplight at Town Center Parkway & Gate Parkway at least 3 time a week, and at the Chipotle Grill light at least twice a week. There is a woman/man duo under the JTB underpass maybe twice a week. The woman stands on one side of Gate and man on the other and I see her running to him when I'm at the light. Also, when I go to Starbucks at Gate and Deer Lake there is one there. My friend owns a condo on Gate near the Town Center and they put up a bus stop in front of her community. She thinks that's a part of how they get there. Panhandling is only illegal on private property. They are in intersections and on the street.

I doubt it is "packed" with these people as OP seems to think. Maybe he/she just happened upon some on a particularly bad day.

Another thing that just happened last week (?), the Black Finn closed it's doors. That was an extremely popular restaurant, and each time we drove by it when we were in the Town Center, the parking lot was packed. Some folks were really annoyed to find a sigh on the door saying they were permanently closed. However, there were a couple of incidents that happened there that didn't help the restaurant stay going.

But, still don't see any beggars or panhandlers when we are in that area. Perhaps we just go at the right times. We were at Mimi's Saturday AM and didn't see a thing in the area.

You're talking about people at stoplights, the original premise of this was panhandling inside of SJTC, which I still have never seen.

Actually, you are incorrect. My original post was regarding the Town Center "area". Not the mall. I asked if it's safe with so many homeless people walking around there. I like to take evening walks and such, so the area itself was my concern since I considered moving on Town Center Parkway or Gate Parkway.

By the way guys, here is a pic from my lunch trip today on Gate Parkway.

Your post said it was "PACKED" with homeless and beggars, which is INCORRECT.

Ridiculous what some people are afraid of. Do you *really* think a pandhandler on a streetcorner is going to tackle you in front of 1,000 other people and rob/murder you???

I'll say it again, RIDICULOUS.

Regardless of quantity, of people just STOPPED giving them money they would eventually get the idea and move on. As long as we donate to their habit, they will come...… and more and more will get the idea and join them. It is a supply and demand thing that most people do not get.

You are obviously just trying to find something to disagree with in my post because you were wrong and don't want to admit it. You clearly don't live out here so have no idea of whether it's packed or not because you didn't even know there could one out here let alone 10.

Secondly, if you expanded your reasoning a little you'd realize that when the sun goes down, they're likely not far away. They leave their belonging under the overpass sometimes so perhaps they sleep there, who knows? The point is, we don't know their pasts and whether or not they are thieves or burglars or whatever. So, yes, residents have a right to be a little leery when there are homeless people hanging around your neighborhood when they don't live there and we don't know their mental state or criminal history.

So, sure, the chances of them robbing someone in broad daylight is pretty slim, but I guess with some people, you just have to explain things like you're talking to a child.

The “bleeding hearts” type? I think they get it and say “it’s my money and I’ll use it the way I want to”.

I agree. The blonde couple that owns the underpass territory look like healthy, able-bodied individuals who can work. They can't be over 35 years old.
